Anyone have any experience or know of any players who've had this injury?

Apparently from the research I've done this is a common baseball injury just caused by swinging the bat. The Hamate is a small hooked shape bone in the lower palm of the hand.

Yes it is a injury than can happen to hitters, especially when hitting with wood. If you know who Andy D'Alessio is, 1B for Clemson, he broke his in high school, seems to have recovered from it well. The "Direct Protect" is a great piece of equipment to wear to protect the hamate bone, most big leaguers wear it... rafael palmeiro, and a bunch of other guys.

mrmom ,
I have had some pro clients that fractured their Hamate bone . All did of them did this hitting or on a check swing . All but one had surgery , and then were as good as new . The only one that did not come back alright tried to play through it because the organizations trainers said that it was a bone bruise . After the pain got worse , they figured that it was a fractured Hamate bone . By then it did enough damage that he had to go through extensive physical therapy and he still wasn't able to grip the bat properly . So he retired after getting the remainder of his contract paid . So make sure that with injuries to the hand , it is always a good idea to get an x-ray so that you can rule out any damage or fractures to the bones . I hope that this helps ,
Best Wishes ,
Kerry

Any idea about the approximate recovery time after surgery?
