A question, since my son's school seemed to be the only thing going on around town there were quite a few radar guns in the stand...I couldn't overhear the conversations (wish I was a fly on the wall) but after noticeing 2 of them put down their guns and started using a stop watch...and I heard .8 and .82 and some mutters...don't know if its good or bad...asked my son later and he said they were timing him to the plate and that was real good and said it means they are not going to be stealing off you....just wondering if anyway had different thoughts on this....

What I've heard is this: average time running 1st to 2nd is 3.2 seconds; catcher's time to second around 2 seconds, so pitcher's time to the plate needs to be 1.1 second or less.

As a catcher's mom I can say a pitcher's time to the plate is very important to stop the steal.

Actually the pitchers bogey for time to the plate is 1.3 (College and Pro). Not trying to be antogonistic but I don't know that I've ever seen a time to the plate of .8 or .82 so maybe they were timing the ball out of the hand to the mit. I've seen some scouts who think they can measure velocity by this method (highly inaccurate). They have a chart that converts the stopwatch timing to miles per hour.

Well lie I said I have no idea what is a good or bad time and didn't here the entire conversation but the .8 I did hear but maybe it was in reference to something else...They did have stopwatches because I saw 2 of them sitting together put down the guns and pull them out...

Fastballs normally get to the plate in less than .5 seconds. The .8 seconds might be the time up to release. If you then add the time for the pitch to get to the plate it ends up at about 1.2 or 1.3 seconds overall.
