I might drop by if I'm in the neighborhood... Wink

Thanks for the note, TPM. I'll give you a call on Friday.

Eight teams (probably) headed for the NCAA tournament. It ought to be a humdinger! Best of luck to everyone!

Would love to see some of these games but ... what's up with putting the tourney in Jacksonville year after year? That makes it hard for anybody to see any of the games. I guess no one will have a home field advantage, but why can't they put this somewhere located more centrally to the schools so that some fans can turn out?

At least the 2009 tournament in Boston should be fun, even if it is at the geographical northern tip of the conference. TPM, sorry you won't be around for that one, but we're hoping to be! Never been to Fenway.

Midlo Dad,
The baseball grounds at Jacksonville great facility to play and stadium almost filled to capacity last year for some games, others not. FSU had the largest amount of fans in attendance.
I heard grumblings that it should be more centrally located and where it is not so hot this time of year. I understand the best attended games were when it was held in Greenville. noidea
I also hear lots of grumblings with bringing it to Fenway, though I think that would be neat for many it is out of the way and expensive.

Two years ago, when it was held in Salem, VA, it was poorly attended compared with Jacksonville last year; despite the fact that Salem is more centrally located in the conference's footprint. My speculation is that Jacksonville's relative proximity to FSU, Clemson, Georgia Tech, and Miami, the teams whose fans seem to travel best for baseball historically, made the difference.

I nominate Richmond, VA to host in a future year! Centrally located, and lots of ACC fanatics around to fill the stands. By the time you get there, we might even have a new stadium for you. (Or not! But don't get me started on THAT.)

It's not like they have veto power.

The Diamond is run by an authority that has a lease with the Braves for the AAA club. Anyone's guess how it'll all get structured if and when they renovate or move the stadium. At the rate we're going, there's talk we may lose the R-Braves, at which point we'll be hungry for a major baseball event.

VCU plays at the Diamond and talks from time to time about buying it if the R-Braves pull out, but UR has its own playing field on its campus. That field could not accommodate a major tourney -- not enough stands or other facilities.

Prepster,
I heard back in the days at Greenville it was packed!

I would say FSU had the largest group of fans. But also, there were many there who were just college baseball fans and came to watch good baseball.

You are correct, Jax is located close to where the largest fan base would travel less, that being who you mentioned.

Yhis year with only 8 teams playing should be interesting.
