My son did this last year, so I feel your pain. Very hard to discuss this before the season even begins with the coach and expect to have any meaningful baseball experience this spring. In all likelihood, telling the coach you want to transfer pre-season may well end your season. Mine got little PT and late in the season went to the coach and told him one-on-one that he wanted to transfer. His coach said he appreciated how he handled it and he'd help him go anywhere except to an in conference school, and in fact, he did contact coaches at the two schools to which my son was most interested in transfering. A friend's son had a similar desire and spoke to his coach halfway through their season. His coach exploded on him and he was off the team right then and there.

Indications to others that you want to transfer before you talk to the coach is a no-no. College baseball is one huge gossip grapevine and word can fly, so a word to a friend at a school hours away can get back to your head coach faster than the speed of light.

A dicey situation to be sure. I'd suggest a very thoughtful discussion with your parents first and foremost. After that, until you talk to your coach, whenever that happens, I wouldn't be talking to teammates about it as word may get there before you do. Maybe things will look different once the season gets going as you've only been through fall ball so far, and you might not want to go after the real deal gets underway. Good luck.

Go Hokies! Go Rams! Go Captains!

Telling the coach now that you want to transfer, unless you have a place to go in January for the spring semester, can be a death knell depending on the coach.

Hokie is soooooooo correct about the grapevine with regard to college coaches--be careful who you say what to who until the time is right

Why tell the coach? the reason that most kids transfer is they dont think they are getting enough time or something else. the last time I checked the coach still makes the lineup. dont cut off your nose to spite your face. From experience everybody wants to play right away but the reality of a lot of situations is that you have to sort of pay your dues.

I am curious why he wants to transfer?
To me when you commit to a team you should follow through for the season regardless of playing time.
I do think there are good reasons for transferring but not before the season is over. The coach has invested time and money in your son and he has to do his best to earn playing time and the respect of the coach.
College ball is a tough gig with all the recruiting which in some sense never stops. I remember a cousin in Atlanta who worked for Coke told me he wouldn't even take his hollidays because he was afraid he would come back and find his office taken. I don't know if he was stretching it a bit but his point was that it was very competetive for his job.
If it is playing time then you should put everything into your training and playing opportunities and talk to your coach at the end of the season. See how he sees you fitting in next year but keeping in mind there will be more guys comming in to compete. If it is a personality issue or academic issue then transfer may be the best solution.

Some colleges won't talk to you until you get a release from your current coach/school. It's best to wait to make contact after the season ends.

It's a tough situation.

Why are you transferring ?

You run the risk of the coach finding out and that could be tough on you.

I am not sure if the coaches can even discuss this while you are at your present school. Does thsi violate any rules?

by rule you should get "permission to contact form" from your AD before another coach will talk to you if you're going NCAA to NCAA. However, if you do that your coach will know also.

that said - what usually happens is inquiries are made to the new coach thru 3rd parties - ex hs or summer team-mates, trusted summer or hs coach etc.

it still could get around if you don't have reliable people making the contact for you, but if handled descretely and if the coach is interested, it's often a "done deal" before the ink is dry on your release -
which btw comes from the AD, not your old coach.

hope that helps

.
