South Carolina's Campbell has surgery to fix blood clot

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina left fielder Michael Campbell had surgery to remove a rib and help clear up a blood clot in an artery in his right shoulder.
The condition was discovered about three weeks ago. Campbell says he'll be ready to go in two to three months.

Campbell spent six days in the hospital and said he had his top rib removed so the artery could "have more room to work with (and) to prevent it from happening again," he told The (Greenville) News in a story Wednesday.

Campbell hit .312 last year with 14 homers and 52 RBI as South Carolina made its third-straight College World Series.

Trainers have told Campbell that the blood clot wasn't congenital and most likely came from shoulder muscles growing more quickly than his body could accommodate.

Campbell is undergoing regular blood tests to make sure the condition doesn't recur.

From the SC Website:

Over the last three years has played more games than any player in Division I Baseball (200) with 193 consecutive starts in the outfield for Carolina ... Currently 13th on the career list for games played at South Carolina ... One of 19 players in South Carolina history to record over 200 hits ... Heads into 2006 season seventh on the school career list for at-bats (741) and 12th for hits at South Carolina with 223 ... Preseason All-American candidate, named to Wallace List, award given to nation's top player.

Good news on WOF's son in today's Columbia Newspaper.
Campbell’s persistence propelled him out of the slump and has him on the way to finishing his career as one of the Gamecocks’ most decorated players. He already has broken a pair of school records — he is USC’s all-time at-bats and triples leader — and is expected to break Landon Powell’s games-played record Sunday when he makes his 252nd appearance in Gamecocks uniform.

Campbell, whose .358 batting average is third on the team, could leave USC with no fewer than six school records to his name.

I do believe that this happened a while ago.

Unfortunetly this evening, he was hit by a pitch By Vandy's David Price and broke his finger that requires immediate surgery. He is done for the season.

Hey TR...what would you like explained? the advise he received? the terminology the writer used? I'll be happy to clarify if I can.

Michael came from doctor today. They cast it, it was a very clean break...said the cast would be removed in 3 weeks and he could start rehab..should have a bat back in his hands in 4-6 weeks.

He was 4 hits short of the all-time hit record at SC. Can't complain tho..he has had a great college career there and has a lot to look forward to because we all know he plans to continue playing baseball!

WOF,
Thank you, I know we are constantly reminded not to believe everything we read. Eek

My best to your player, and may he have continued success.

Well, they DID tell him and I that he needed surgery. They were going to put a little pin in it to make sure that it grew back "perfectly." Probably wouldnt do that for you or I. Smile The doctor today said is is such a clean break, it was not at all necessary. I could have told you it was a perfectly clean break when I saw the x-ray! Anyway, he is all cast up and headed to Hoover for the weekend. Thanks for the concern....even if you are a Clemson fan! Wink
