I am an assistant coach at an NAIA school and am trying to schedule my recruiting calendar. Any rosters of players available for upcoming tournaments/showcases/etc in the Northern VA area?

You will surely need to check out the Virginia Barnstormers this year, they're dirty.

Having played the Barnstormers this past weekend, I would have to say that they are one of the weaker squads assembled in the past few years. Much of this can be attributed to Ron Tugwell's VA Cardinals team, but the Barnstormers aren't the team that they used to be.

How does the Cardinal's 14U team affect an ODL team?

"Dirty"?

I take it that no longer means what I always thought it meant?

Gamefan said you (tcw_17) might've been talking about a 14U Cardinals team, I don't know where that came from because I'm talking about the ODL team. I gues I should've worded it better, their younger players are better, most of the sophomores are good. Midlo, to elaborate dirty... Jason Farley and Eric Cantrell last year were "dirty", Matt Snyder=Dirty... and if it helps James River is dirty, back to back state champs. Its not like dirty clothes if thats what you thought it meant.

I don't believe the VA Cardinals - the Ron Tugwell team, that did in past dilute somewhat from the players that might have played for past Barnstormer teams, is in operation this year. Many of the players from the last several years, including the Snyders, and some former Barnstormer players such as Mike Mitchell, are playing on a "Pirates" team this year. This Pirate team is playing a combination of selected Cal Ripken teams, selected Clark Griffith teams, and a few National level tournaments, to include the WWBA 18U tourney.

With respect to the comment by tcw_17, there could be no more truth spoken. Several years back, Tugwell took the "Junior" Barnstormer team with the likes of Blackwell, Snyder(s), Thomas, Bowers and many other good NVA players and split off to form the Cardinals. That team then picked up players that in all likelihood would have been Barnstormers; like Kyle Long, Kyle Hald, etc.

To that end, Chris Warren put together a quality team last year but certainly less heralded. They were good but missing the top D1's, one has to be honest. They were less talented. They had Beal, Tison, Jeter and others but....

So, what happened this year? Warren had to battle the Hurricanes (and others) for many of the top players and he lost them. Why? Well, the opinion could be that players saw all the D1 signees for the "other" teams and less for the Barnstormers.

Reason...It goes back to Tugwell.

Not sure why he left the Barnstormer deal but it will hurt for several more years in my opinion. Warren will figure it out and they'll be back.

I thought Tison went with the Cardinals, not the Barnstormers? Or did he do some for both?

And, where did he end up? Pretty good infielder/hitter not to get recruited somewhere.

The Hurricanes got invited to Jupiter last fall, getting an entree into that is a big deal and that gives the Hurricanes a leg up in recruiting players.

The Tugwell Cardinals, who also played in the PG/WWWBA 17U tourney summer, had several variants last year and the prior year depending on if you are talking about summer or fall. In the summer, they had plenty of infielders to include Foster Dunegan, Brett Bowers, Jamie Blackwell, and others. I don't believe Brig Tyson was part of this team. In the fall of 2008, some of the players went to other teams, such as the Snyders to the Orioles Scout team. It's possible that Tyson played some with them during this time frame.

As for competition among the most senior level travel teams, there definitely is a lot of competition for players. If a coach can get the top pitchers lined up, and a lot of them, then he will have a lot of leverage when recruiting position players. At one time the Barnstormers were the most significant showcase team coming out of Northern Virginia. Now, there are multiple Northern Virginia based showcase teams, in addition to the Barnstormers, as well as a significant and growing number of Northern Virginia players who are willing to travel significantly to join Maryland, Richmond/Va Beach, NC, or Pennsylvania-based teams. The competition is severe, the best players tend to travel in packs, tournament participation is critical, and perceptions of which coach is doing the best job in helping his players get recruited are all important.

I heard that Tugwell is no longer coaching a specific team but was trying to get a recruiting advice type business going. If so, given his reputation, I would think that he would steer players to various showcase teams that he feels will best suit their abilities and needs.

Brig Tison ended up playing with Chris Warren's VA Barnstormer team last season (2007).
Brig recently committed to play for Bowling Green State University....(as I recall, that has been posted somewhere else on this website).

Congrats to Brig.....

(FYI....Brig did play on the Brad Marrs VA Cardinals team during the WWBA 17U last summer. That was a team created only for the WWBA tourney. This may have created the confusion earlier in the thread: Marrs' Cardinals vs. Tugwell Cardinals)
