Matoaca finally looked like the young team they are against TD.They made 6 errors and the pitching wasn't there. They made contact pretty good but always right at somebody. They made Dale look alot better than they are.But-the TD coach(Marshall)must be insane. The TD pitcher(Cullen)threw almost 130 pitches(126 I believe). He has a 10-2 lead in the 7th and the pitcher is already over 100 and he leaves him in.This is 2 days after pitching 2 innings of relief against Dinwiddie(39 pitches). That last inning you could see the pitcher(Cullen)really stretching his arm and it was obviously bothering him.The kid is only a sophomore-why would you do that? They had the game won.Even heard the kids father was very upset.I'm no pitching expert but is this normal for high school?

I don't know about normal, but it's all too common, and the kid's dad needs to seek a meeting with the coach about it.
Our former coach did that to my son his sophomore year. We were fortunate to get a new coach who put a stop to it the next year. But you can't sit back and hope you dodge all the bullets.
Surely there is someone on that team who can get 3 outs without giving up 8 runs?

It is pretty easy to sit back and blast the Coach, when you know nothing about the situation. This pitcher did not throw 40 pitches vs Din. You received some false info. He threw basically what constituted a bullpen session vs Din. Against Matoaca, he was under 100 coming into the 7th. It was discussed among the coaches and the pitcher and the pitcher wanted to finish a fabulous game off. He wasn't sent back out there with a complete disregard for his arm. You have no right to comment on and try to make a coach seem like he doesn't care about his kids. It is always a tough decision at the end of game what to do with a pitcher who is nearing the end of his rope. Sometimes you defer to the kid, sometimes your staff is weak, sometimes you have a three/four game week and the staff is thin. You also have to consider what pitches a certain guy throw. If he is a FB/CH guy, he can throw more overall pitches in a game than a guy who mainly relies on Curve/Cutter. The pitcher we are discussing threw many more FB and CH than curves last night. The kid also is not pitching again until next Friday. And prior to the Din. game, he had not pitched for 5-6 days. Please know all the facts before you start throwing around accusations and calling people insane....
Easy Chair' It is easy to sit back and blast another poster too! As far as the exact details/stats of Bill Cullen's pitching I don't know. What I do know that if it was left up to him to continue he would pitch 500 pitches if that is what it takes. You won't meet a kid with a bigger heart or more desire to compete. I wish him the best. 3up

Papelbon-the facts are this-going into the 7th,he was at 101-check the official scorebook and dont hand me that **** about what pitches he throws determines how his arm is.So what your saying is if he throws certain pitches he can throw 200 a game? And this is fact-his dad was upset. If what you say is true about all the coaches saying he was alright then maybe all of them are insane.Stoots would never do that to a kid-he has a strict pitch count(75 a game for sophs even though not one of them has reached that) and he doesn't ask the kid if he can continue because the answer is always yes.In fact,he might have one of the best sophomore pitchers in the area but he wont use him yet because he wants him to be pitching fresh when hes a senior. The kids get their bullpen sessions in and thats enough. If I had a kid pitching thats what I'd want. The future is important-not a 10-2 lead in the 7th in a early season district game.

Fact: No pitcher has had arm problems at Dale the last two years
Fact: Stoots doesn't pitch his Soph. much because he likes to rely on his Seniors on the mound, not because of pitch counts
If you don't think certain pitchers can throw more pitches than others, then you don't know squat about pitching. The true stress pitches on arms are curves, sliders, cutters
Cullen's Dad was not mad or upset. He was just a little concerned. So stop saying he was angry or flipping out
Would you have said any of this, if Matoaca had not been whipped all over the field? Bill is fine, his arm is okay, stop trying to start stuff. This is not CBC, kids go deep into games sometimes. There was no malice in Bill going the distance. The coach wasn't trying to ruin the kids future. He and his Dad are okay with it
Like I said-10-2 lead in the 7th,perfect time to get your inexperieced kids in and get some mound time which wont do nothing but help you come tourney time. You need to think before you speak. Not once did I say he was FLIPPING OUT-maybe you know something about that. All i said was he pitched alot of pitches(way to many).Matoaca got taken behind the woodshed.Paper said 6 errors-it was actually 8.Game was over early,.Stoots knew that. What did he do?Those last 3 pitchers were sophs who got valuable mound time against a quality opponent. If it was 2-1,2-2 it would've been different.Perfect time for the inexperieced Dale coach to get some other kids in there. If you think it was alright then you dont know squat about baseball.

LOL...that inexperienced coach has done pretty well. Dale doesn't have the luxury of a deep pitching staff and had played Din and CH back to back. The projected closer for the team broke his leg last month and is out for the year. Several times this year, teams in our region have come back from similar deficits. No game is ever over, especially considering the way Matoaca had been hitting the ball prior to Friday night. The coaches believed that Bill had one more inning in him and he did. Prior to this week, Bill last pitched on 3/24. Nobody is throwing his arm off. End of story
You are relating everything to wins and losses.Just like I said the inexpeienced coach was not thinking about the welfare of the kid.It doesn't matter if the kid said he could go on or not.You have to think of the kids future-just ask MidloDad-his son is the best in the state and you saw what he said. You have to put a stop to it-it goes on too much-be reasonable.I've met people like you-the win at all costs no matter what.I would rather play for a coach who looks down the road and is actually concerned about the future.Now-END OF STORY!

I've heard all sorts of lame excuses for overpitching a kid and you have trotted out a few of them here, but they are still lame excuses for putting a kid's future at risk -- for one high school game, a regular season game at that, and one that wasn't even close.
It's great that you like the coach enough to defend him. Do you like him enough to talk to him and help him learn to do better?
