I used to think things were hand-picked in advance as that's what I had always heard, but my son and a friend from another area school went to tryouts last year knowing nobody (both are from the Shenandoah Valley and have little contact with northern Virginia coaches), both were selected and both played plenty at Salem. My son even missed the first day of tryouts due to a conflict with a state playoff game, but was told to come to the second weekend.

I was very impressed with the whole operation; having seen the tryouts, I'd hate to have the job of cutting the group down from close to 100 to the final squad.

I'd encourage any player not specifically invited to contact the coaches with their "resume" and see if they can at least try out. There is no better exposure than what we saw at the Commonwealth workouts (BP/Infield) and games, and the players are treated royally by the folks that run the games. My son rates The Commonwealth games as one of the most memorable things he's done in baseball to date.

Was it just a one day tryout?

In prior years, it was done over two days, or two weekends: a round of cuts, then approximately 40-50 are invited back, divided into two teams, they scrimmage, then coaches call the selected players after they pow-wow.

Any clue when the commonwealth teams will start playing some games against other commonwealth teams? I know this summer sometime. Just trying to line up some times I can attend.

Check the Commonwealth Games web site. All of the games are played over 3 days in July. Check www.commonwealthgames.org for schedules.

Thanks for the websight. Of course the one weekend I actually have something planned is that one. I will be going to the NASCAR race in New Hampshire that weekend. The odds were 2 in 12 they could have it on a bad weekend, (as I also have a weejend in August I have to take my daughter back to college in Kentucky), and amazingly they did pick a bad weekend for me.

But thanks anyway for the information.

The info I have is that the high school baseball games will be held July 7-9 not the following weekend.
