I'm taking the "prospect" there this weekend. Anyone know anything about these. It's one day, 1/19, and states there will be some coaches there for looks. The weather looks OK anyway ...

Thanks for all the good comments. JustMom, I may take you up on that. Calls for decent weather up your way for this. Maybe a little chilly, but it's BASEBALL. My "prospect" just got his first 7.0 60 time yesterday, so he's psyched !!!!

3 pitchers around 88. The Showcase was well organized. I saw no real college scouts, probably due to the season starting soon. Infielders were all pretty evenly matched. There were a few outfielders there as well. The catching was a bit weak in my opinion. All in all, it was a good opportunity for some players to get a ranking. Just too doggone cold outside !!! Thank goodness for the indoor facility !!!! It was fun and as my boy said, "Dad, it was baseball and it was a good day"

I know two of the three pitchers were Scott Taylor and Randy Buffington... top OF was John Bivens from Prince George, which was clocked at 88 mph... don't recall the best IF throw, but it was probably Ryan Wood... best catcher was Mike Roberts from Prince George also with several pop times in the 1.8-1.9 range including a 1.81... scout wise i would say there was 5 pro scouts, don't recall any colleges being there because of the rule...
It was well run and had about 60 prospects there.

Help me understand this logic. Buffington is a Senior, throws 88 mph and did not sign early.

Pirate fan, you know as well as anyone that there is more to pitching than just the top speed. Also, there is more to signing early than whether you receive an "offer" or not. He may have received offers, just not the one he wants.

The "bunt" is a powerful weapon!

Eagle One,
You are right on all accounts.

But all you every hear in how fast someone pitches. No one takes about the art of pitching. I do not know who this Buffington kid is, but I too find it interesting,(based on all the discussions on various threads) that he did not sign. Every camp and showcase that is discussed, his name comes up for hitting 88-90 mph. Many of the so called experts out there say if the one who throw the heat they sign early, get the most money, blah, blah, blah.

This is not a discussion regarding Buffington, it really goes back to what you said early; "there is more to pithcing than velocity". If that is the case then why so much attention on velocity?

Why is the pitcher who hits his spot, mixes up his pitches and keeps the batter off balance, has control of several pitches, pitches grounder, strikes out his fare share and does not give up the long ball so often overloked?

Where is Billy Beane when you need him????

It does happen. My 03 was a lhp, low to mid-80's, but more low than mid, and threw plenty of 78 mph fastballs as well. He had good control, mixed speeds well on all his pitches and was very effective at getting guys out. Perhaps not a great indicator but in 8 showcase innings, over 3 showcases, he allowed only 1 hit and no walks, and that was noticed. He got significant interest from D-2's, some "Howdy-do"'s from D-1's, and signed early with a D-2. Our experience was that some scouts will look at the gun and if it isn't "lit up" after 2-3 throws, they ignore the rest, but there are coaches/scouts out there looking for pitchers that win games and get guys out. You have to be more patient, and develop thick skin when you see some scouts tune out, but there are coaches looking. Emphasize the positive on those letters, get batters out in showcases, and good things may happen, even if it is in the slow lane. A good changeup, that can be spotted, is almost as valuable to some scouts as the 85+ heater. Good luck.
