Its hard to say what, if any, freshman will make an impact in the Beach District...at least at the varsity level. I assume from your post that you may have a son that age? If so, by all means tell us about him.

You're handle suggests that you have a son or daughter at Boston College...someone we should look for on the field for the Eagles this year?

Ocean Lakes had 4 freshman play yesterday in their loss to Salem. Casey Bryant (Catcher) went 1-2, Killian Strenn (3rd) went 1-2, Sean Morimondo pitched 2 strong innings allowing no runs. I am not sure where the other boy plays I believe short..

At PAHS we have three freshman. One, Zach Smith is starting in LF and our lead off hitter. He's doing a very nice job. Greg Tomchick and Chase Lemaster are on the varsity squad. Tomchick pitched yesterday two innings with 4 K's and no runs. He will see more time on the mound this year and probably be the ace next year. Can anyone say Ben two? Lemaster plays behind a Jr at SS. He will see a lot of time next year. Most importantly, all three are polite good kids with lot's of talent.

glad to hear zach smith starting varsity-obviously there is future potential and desire. for some reason i had him going to fc this year-
tomchick....that's really a 'no brainer' for varsity! i think there a few others out there that just need the chance (fc and cox) and there is one from cape henry and a catcher at bishop worth watching......

One of the best frosh in the '10 class is starting at SS for Western Branch, Nick Thompson. He has a chance to be the best player to come of this area. (and, yes, I know who has come from this area)

Also, Hunter Higgerson and Danny Grauer are alternating between JV and varsity at Hickory.

Is Scotty Hurrell on Landstown's varsity roster?

i know the thread said beach freshman but i saw one of norfolk academy's scrimmages and their freshman shortstop, tj costen, is definitly a name that has to be thrown in here. I think he hit lead off for them last year as an 8th and i know its private school but thats still impressive

If that's the case about Costen, doesn't that mean his eligibility is affected? I'm not sure about the new rules, someone will have to enlighten me.

From what I've seen, Nick is very good, but I'm guessing he starts at SS only when Jared Sivertson pitches correct? I'd find it hard to believe that after 3 years at SS Jared would be moved as a senior

bceaglemom- I can't think of any freshmen that even made the varsity team at Cox...for that matter, I'm not even sure any freshmen start regularly on the JV team. Some good young players no doubt, but its takes exceptional players to move directly from MS to HS varsity

F.C. has two Varsity Freshman. Ryan Cook (middle infielder & pitcher) David Berman (Catcher). They both will be floating between J.V. and Varsity. It is good to see so many young players getting an opportunity. Looks like 2011 class has some talant.

I think it is a VHSL rule, no a private school rule.

And, yes, TJ is a talented player.

Correct. Nick rotates between the mound, SS and JV.

My interpretation of the newly implemented rule was that if a player played more than 4 years of varsity ball, for example 8th-12th then he would only have 3 yrs of eligiblity left for college.

Injured (hamstring); re-evaluated April 15th.

Not sure if he is actually listed on the roster per-say ( I believe he is), but yes without the injury he would be in the starting lineup and I had him penciled batting at the top of the line-up.

He was sure-handed at short this past summer-fall. (allows Lawhorn to stay at 2nd; minimizing chances of any throwing injury)

Hurrell was possiblly #3 or #4 on pitching depth chart.

Michael Curry and Jeremy Saniford will see considerable playing time this year.

Now that the season is well underway, I am also curious as to how much some of the freshman are contriubuting. Some of the names that I've heard earned starting positions/significant playing time and are playing well are:

TJ Costen/Norfolk Academy - batting leadoff, playing SS and pitching. Great player.

Ryan Cook/First Colonial - Middle Infielder, hitting very well.

Tyler Ballard/Cape Henry - 3rd, pitched 2-hitter vs. Christchurch

Greg Tomcheck/Princess Anne - P

Killian Strenn (sp?)/Ocean Lakes - 3rd

It would be nice to hear more about how these guys are doing and also how some of the other members of the class of 2011 are doing.

Zach Smith is playing well for Princess Anne but he is a sophomore, not a freshman. He played on the JV team last year.

Sorry for the confusion. Yes, TJ Costen is at Norfolk Academy - I saw that he had a HR and 4 RBIs in a blow-out vs. Walsingham. I don't know much about Christchurch other than their game vs. Cape Henry and that they split with Norfolk Academy.

Observer, thanks for the clarification regarding Zach Smith. I didn't realize there were two players by that name at the beach.
