Congrats to the Mets for a solid win over the Canes this past weekend at the tournament in Norfolk.

The Canes looked great but not enough to shake the 3-0 win from the Mets.It all started in the middle of the game after two back to back bunt hits by Harry Slade(Loyola HS)and Derek Justice(Orange HS).

Congrats also to Dan Gitzen GM and his fine staff for assembling some great talent.

Who pitched for the Mets? Did the Mets bring in any more new players for this tournament (I know that they added players over the last several tournaments)?

Chris Taylor threw for the Mets. He had an outstanding performance going 6 2/3 innings with no runs. For this tournament, the only two players the Mets added were Huston Hergeshimer (IF, RHP) and Harry Slade (OF, LHP)

Is Chris Taylor the same player who pitched down at Wake Forest on the last day (that pitcher shut down a very good team, as well)?

Did any of the mavericks play for the M-A Mets in the tournament? Now that the mavericks have disbanded, will any of them join up with the mets?

And - can anyone share their take on the M-A Mets before the tryouts in August?

"Now that the mavericks have disbanded, will any of them join up with the mets?"

Any idea why the Mavericks disbanded?

gamefan,

the Mid-atlantic Mets are in their first season together as a team but my son has gotten great looks with them from good division 1 schools...Dan Gitzen and his staff have been nothing but excellent so far in helping us with the colelge recruiting proces. I would highly recommend going to the tryout.

The Mavericks broke into 2 groups - one group joined with the MA mets and the other was a 14U - then Varsity Team. Word is that the Coach of the 14U team let half the kids on the team without trying out who were 8th graders and all the High School kids had to tryout. He never cut anyone from the team once all the High School kids joined - so he ended up with 18 kids and 18 unhappy parents. I'm told he promised the High School kids they would be the main players and told the 8th graders that the High School boys were only pitchers. I don't think anyone returned for the fall and only one of the HS kids went with the Coach. It's a shame because the Mavericks name was always associated with winning.

I hear that some of the older group maybe joining the CANES - so on to bigger and better things.

I do know that none of the original Mavericks played on the new 14u team. Different coach, different players. It's probably just time to move on to bigger programs to showcase their baseball skills.

I think they were too old.

But it's not that the 14U didn't have any talent - I've heard of some of the High School kids. I hear the Coach basically coached the 8th graders since little league thought they were better than the HS kids. Which is why he did not cut them - plus I think his son was in the group of eight graders - so there you have it - Paid Coaches is usually the best option.

I did hear of some players trying out for a fall team. But not sure who.

I know last year's 14U Mavericks were talented but this year's version was not very good.

Actually I think they were good - but they had too many kids. I mean they beat a lot of the Varsity teams. So, for 8th graders and freshman, they were decent. My kid wanted to play with them, and I'm glad he didn't -- once I found out about the coaching/kids situation.

I guess we have a different definition of "good". We played in a couple of tourneys against them and they did not advance past pool play.

Well , I know they had talent, but if you can't get out of pool play, then, you are right - especially with 18 players. I hear it was more of a coach not using the all the tools in the shed. see my post above.
