Runner on third, no outs. Batter hits a deep fly ball to the outfield. If the outfielder drops the ball, and it would have scored the runner on third if he caught it, should it be scored a sac fly or an error?

Both an error and a sac fly. As far as the batter goes score it a sac fly. The batter is not charged an AB and gets the RBI. (he did good) ---- On the defense score an error on the outfielder. (they did bad) This satisfies the scorebook as far as the batter/runner reaching base on the error and should he score --- it would result in an unearned run.

I saw a different variation of this play last night. R3, 1 out. Batter hit straight up fly to cf. R3 tags and scores easily. Appeal made @ 3rd that he left early, and he's declared out. Score keeper wondering if batter still gets sac. Runner still scores easily if he hadn't left early.

Same thing with slight variation. R3 1 out, deep fly ball but runner did not tag thinking it would drop in and did not score. We scored it as an out with no sac, just a case where a runner messes up a batter. (which are many) In your case I am not sure but think I would score it as a Sac with no RBI.
