Runner on first...batter comes up and hits a deep shot to left field...fielder goes back to the fence...ball hits fielder in the glove and goes over the fence...home run?...or on by error?....are the 2 runs that score earned runs against the pitcher or unearned?....thanks in advance!

have seen this happen a couple of times in the majors and i think it is ruled a home run and all runs being earned. usually a leap against the wall or running into the wall and the ball comes out. most of the time it is hard to get to the fence and get under a fly.

Osage -- was he camped under it, or running after it?

If he's standing there waiting to catch it, and then it bounces off his glove and over the fence, it seems like it could legitimately be scored as an error (although the batter still gets to do the home-run trot).

The earned/unearned part is pretty black & white and entirely dependent on how the play was scored: if it's an error, they're both unearned. If not, then earned.

So tell us a little more about the attempted catch.

Clearly this is scored a home run...and of course runs are earned (assuming no errors prior...)
