Little dribbler out toward the pitcher. He gets to it fairly quickly, but doesn't get a handle on the ball right away (fields it barehanded)...but gets it up and makes a good fast throw to first, just missing getting the runner out. I was inclined to rule it a hit, but had the pitcher picked up the ball just a little more cleanly, the batter would have been out.

It IS what you call it. However it does sound like an error because the pitcher mishandled the ball. Had he not mishandled the ball he could have recorded an out. Fungo

Agree with Fungo, especially since the way you describe it makes it sound like he had time to use two hands (gloved and bare) to scoop the ball up cleanly. He approached it wrong and paid the price.
