R1 and R3, and R1 tries to steal, catcher pumps to second and had a guy caught between third and home. He chases the runner back, flips to third, but runner switches directions, and 3rd baseman throws back to the catcher, and he's out.

Is the play is scored 2-5-2? Does catcher get an assist to, because a play from outfield, like a 9-4-2 would give RF and 2B an assist.

Logically, the answer is yes.

I looked in OBR and couldn't find an exception, so I believe the answer is Yes, but only one assist per play can be credited.

10.10 (a) The official scorer shall credit an assist to each fielder who
(1) throws or deflects a batted or thrown ball in such a way that a putout results, or would have resulted except for a subsequent error by any fielder. Only one assist and no more shall be credited to each fielder who throws or deflects the ball in a run-down play that results in a putout, or would have resulted in a putout, except for a subsequent error; or
(2) throws or deflects the ball during a play that results in a runner being called out for interference or for running out of line.

so if the run down had continued and become the all too familiar, 2-5-2-6-2 play, then I believe the catcher would get credit for 1 assist and 1 putout.
