How would you figure out a pitchers ERA in the following situation if it is the first game of the year. First batter single, next two batters walk, next batter hits a grand slam. Pitcher is pulled from the game. 4 Runs scored but no outs recorded.

Thank you for any help you can give me on this question.

Don't shift the responsibility of your success in this game to somebody else. Be perservering about it. Pay the price and you'll come out where merit takes you. - Branch Rickey

The calculation would involve dividing by zero -- which in mathematical terms is "undefined". So his ERA right now is infinitely large.

If you're looking for how to denote that, you could use "∞".

Hope he gets back in soon and records at least one out! Good luck.

Wait until his next outing and hope he gets at least one out!

But I've seen stat sheets show it at 99.99, because they often don't accommodate more than those digits in the space alotted.
