I read a number of the other topics and it makes me think my question is pretty stupid but here it goes... no runners on, batter gets nailed out at second trying to stetch a single does he get credit for a hit, same answer for out at third or home on what would have been a triple? thanks, new dumb coach

If the batter-runner reaches first safely, then he gets credited with a hit. If he reaches first but is out advancing to second, it's a single. If he makes it to second but is out advancing to third, it's a double. Etc.

How about slides into second for a double, is safe, but overslides the bag and is tagged out. Double or single?

I believe that would be considered getting tagged out going to second.

Therefore, I think it's a single.

If I'm keeping score, this would be a double, because the runner reached 2nd legally and safely.

If the batter had hit the ball well enough to consider trying for a triple, decides against it, and get tagged out going back to second, we'd call that a double, right? The fact that the play at second in the OP was close shouldn't affect the scoring.

Similar question on a steal. How do you score it if the runner overslides the base and gets tagged out? Does he get a steal and a caught stealing?
