How do you score this? Batter hits a double but misses 1st base. The pitcher tosses the ball to 1st on an appeal and the batter is called out.

One other questions on scoring. Runner on 1st with two out. Batter hits a ground ball to short who tosses to 2nd for the force 6-4. Do you credit the batter with a fielders choice? How do you account for his at bat when he isn't the 3rd. out?

Thanks!

MLB rules:

Rule 7.10(b) Comment: PLAY. (a) Batter hits ball out of park or ground rule double and misses first base (ball is dead)—he may return to first base to correct his mistake before he touches second but if he touches second he may not return to first and if defensive team appeals he is declared out at first.

I score it a FC in all cases

7.10(b) verifies that the correct call was made by the umpire, but I'm not sure that was the question being posed. Seems like he's asking whether or not the batter gets credit in the book for a double (when he never touched first base). I would say yes, score it as a double, but mark him out on appeal.

The interesting thing about the FC question (and I would agree that it's an FC), is that in counting runners LOB, the batter DOES get counted here as being left on base (even though he didn't actually reach).

I don't think the batter gets credit for a double. If he misses first, he's out at first if appealed successfully. He can't have a double if he's out at first. I believe he only gets credit for the bases that he safely touches, and if he's out at first, he didn't get any of 'em.

Good call, 06! I think you've nailed this one.

OBR: DETERMINING VALUE OF BASE HITS
10.07(e)..."When the batter, after making a safe hit, is called out for having failed to touch a base, the last base he reached safely shall determine if he shall be credited ... If he is called out for missing first base, he shall be charged with a time at bat, but no hit."

I should have checked it before I responded previously.

Thanks!
