OK, so I seem to be clueless on these unwritten rules, let's list them:

Sorry, I can't add much here. However, I will learn a lot.

Well I always thought the clean up hitter could never bunt.

I'm sorry I am in a mood tonight because we didn't have a good practice today. I guess I am being snippy.

If we post them here they will no longer be "unwritten" will they?

Therefore I won't post any

Well I guess I won't be following any of these "Unwritten Rules" that you all are talking about. I have to know them first.

Also, I prefer to have substaniated (spelling?) proof the rule exists too which I can't do with an "Unwritten" rule.

CoachB25, sounds like we ain't gonna be learning much here

Rule #2
You cannot unwrite a written rule.
[Refer to Rule #1]
Therefore you must be taught these rules by word of mouth.
And trust me if you break an unwritten rule??
You will instintly hear the word of mouth/ LOL

Use a search engine and type in baseball's unwritten rules and you will find many interesting articles.

Just to get it started, one rule is never make the first or last out of an inning at 3B. Another one is never steal late in a game with a big lead.

I don't like making the first, second or third out at third base. For that matter - I don't like making any out at any base. I would like for us to keep scoring runs but the other team usually doesn't agree with us on that.

Here is an interesting unwritten rule of baseball published by Baseball America in 1986 (not sure how they wrote the unwritten rules but you can look it up)

quote:
13 Never let the score influence the way you manage.

Well if you are managing to end the game with the lead and you can do that by mercy ruling the other team then are you breaking other unwritten rules?????

I am so confused right now my head hurts.

By the way here is the list of unwritten rules by Baseball America

http://www.baseball-almanac.com/legendary/liunwrit.shtml

Most of them seem to be of the "no duh" category.

14 Don't go against the percentages.

SO YOU SHOULD NEVER PLAY A HUNCH? IF YOU DO THIS THEN ANYBODY COULD COACH BASEBALL

15 Take a strike when your club is behind in a ballgame.

WHY TAKE A PITCH THAT IS IN YOUR SPOT? I'M NOT SAYING SWING AT EVERYTHING BUT WHY PUT YOURSELF IN THE HOLE BECAUSE SOMEONE SAYS THAT IS WHAT YOU DO? DOESN'T MAKE SENSE TO ME.

16 Leadoff hitter must be a base stealer. Designated hitter must be a power hitter.

WHAT IF YOUR BASE STEALER IS A TERRIBLE HITTER? DO YOU WANT A QUICK GUY WHO MIGHT STRIKE OUT OR DO YOU WANT A GUY WHO CAN GET ON BASE?

I WANT A GOOD HITTER AT THE DH SPOT. IF IT HAPPENS TO BE A POWER HITTER THEN SO BE IT BUT IF HE IS A CONTACT AVERAGE HITTER THEN SO BE IT. I WANT SOMEONE WHO IS GOING TO GET ON BASE.

17 Never give an intentional walk if first base is occupied.

WORKED FOR BOB BRENLEY AND THE DIAMONDBACKS TO WALK BARRY BONDS WITH THE BASES LOADED ONCE

I could just as easily say that if I would typically bunt to advance runners at various portions of the lineup that I do so regardless of score. Therefore, bunt ahead by 10 or more.

I remember that, it was actually Arizona manager Buck Showalter who had closer Greg Olson walked #25 with the bases loaded in 1998. The next batter, catcher Brent Mayne, lined out to end the game.

Wow - has it been that long? Buch Showalter has been out of Arizona for a while now.

Man I am getting older.
