My six year old son broke a 23 year old swimming league record for freestyle during the final meet this season. When the season started, he was 15 seconds from the record, which was unknown to any of my family because we don't worry about such things. The coaches realized he had some potential to be good (and was coachable) and assisted him in improving each and every week. And they had 230 kids to coach!

I saw how each week he was getting better on his dive starts, his stroke, and the number of breaths he was taking. My wife went to the practices and she watched how the coaches were in the pool with the kids showing them how to improve. His development was really amazing!

My point of starting this thread is that this kind of commitment to the kids you are coaching is the only way to expect them to reach their potential.

Congratulation to your son and his breaking a 23 year record! How in the world do you get 230 kids in a swimming pool?

They've been keeping records on 6 year old's freestyle times for more than 23 years? Wow! Are swimming parents even worse than baseball parents?

Rob:

Hate to tell you but yet they are... records exist all the way back to the 1950s at our local pool...
