Son’s game last night – 1st inning, son up to bat, sky opens up, it is pouring down rain and the wind is whipping. Moms and Dads run for cover behind the concession stand. I am standing there with my tiny cheap umbrella. Other parents are calling me over to the awning so I would stay dry. I holler at them “son is up to bat”. By this time I am all alone behind home plate, drenched from head to toe with my umbrella flipped up towards the sky. Son looks back at me and gives me that huge beautiful smile. Was that smile worth getting drenched and freezing my rump off the rest of the game? You bet it was.

louisiana ...

Beautiful story and sentiment. I agree 150% with you that it was well worth it and it will bring a smile to your face and, more importantly, to your son's face over the years.

Are you sure these other parents are 'baseball parents'? Sounds like they don't 'get it' the way most baseball parents do.

I have always believed that no matter what else is going on between players and their parents, the best sight for their youthful eyes is seeing mom and/or dad in the stands during a game. Even at the college and pro levels, I still see players glance in the stands when they know their parents are there. The bond between a baseball player and his parents is different than any other ... IMHO.

Glad you had the opportunity and hope your rump didn't get too cold last night. Personally I could use a little freezing off of my rump but unforunately, I have no cold ball games to go to right now.

I truly live for those moments. I really don’t know if he was smiling at me or laughing at me, but let’s just say for my sake, he was happy to see me there. I did feel like I froze my rump off last night, but when I checked this morning, it was all there (unfortunately).

louisiana09,

"I really don’t know if he was smiling at me or laughing at me,"

Probably the latter, as you sure have me laughing now with your story! Thanks for sharing!

Ya know,..its ALWAYS so good to get off from a crummy day at work and to know that I have my HSBBW gals to come home to! Smile

Louisiana09,...this was a GREAT story! One that I could actually invision in my mind! Makes me get the tingles in anticipation of our HS season to be.
The Varsity list came out today,..and I am proud to announce that shortstopmom's son ( 08'er) will be playing his third year of Varsity. ( yeahhhh babah!!!! Ohhh ouch,....perhaps I shouldn't jump up and down like that anymore!)

We had snow this morning,....so in your honor Louisiana09,...I will promise to think of you at our first game & remember my invisioned picture of you standin' in the cold, freezing your hiney off, wet & with your inverted umbrella,
.....and will repeat the baseballmom promise;
to never let anything get in the way or stop us from watching our boys play this awesome game called baseball!!!!

I will keep you in spirit with me,...under about twelve blankets,...sittin' in the car with the heater on parked behind center field,...that is until the snow goes away! ( then I'll bring out my potted palmtrees and school color cordinated coconut hat! )

Louisiana 09......definately a true baseball mom in the finest sense of the word!!! good

( I checked and no matter how hard I have tried this winter,..I haven't managed to freeze my hiney off either? Whatzzzz up with that???? )

Well you brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for sharing that story. I'm going to print your post and put it on son's desk so maybe, just maybe, he'll give me a smile like that someday when he's at the plate.

louisiana - I can fully relate and too bad other parents can't share in that passion that brings so much joy to us here on HSBBW! Sharing that with our son's has been and is a blessing for so many of us. May you continue to be able to see many more swings and smiles down the road... regardless of mother nature! Smile

<dad tiptoes in...>

Cute story LA09!!! I'm with MN-Mom, I think he was laughing AT you for sitting there in the rain. But you've got to love it that he actually looked back to see if you were still there.

It kind of reminds me of our two oldest. Polar opposites on this type of thing. Our oldest (daughter) played softball and golf in HS (now in college) and would totally ignore us at games. Literally look right through you. Our oldest son on the other hand, ALWAYS acknowledges us with a wave, head nod, wink, something. Shoot, a couple weeks back, I was at one of his basketball games and during the game he came over right in front of me to guard a kid inbounding the ball. He looks up and says "Hey...what's up?" as he's guarding him!!!

I mentioned earlier what a connection baseball is between my son and I. Well, he calls today to tell me about a game on Monday which is against his girlfriend's school. I asked him if she was going to be able to be there to which he replied "I don't know... I haven't told her... I called you first". good I'm still number 1... at least when it comes to baseball!!! Big Grin Yes, it's all been worth it!

Okay gals, I really enjoy hsbaseballweb, however, the internet is also nice for watching baseball. I was unable to travel to my sons weekend baseball game in Texas this weekend but thanks to technology I was able to watch it on the internet. I do have a question though. I am used to sitting in the outfield when he pitches. What do you do when you are watching on the internet? I just paced around the house. Quite humerous when you think about it. I could still hear. I have to also tell you that within 45 minutes of the game the phone rang and I heard a play by play. I love this game.

I drove three hours to my sons school yesterday and three hours home JUST so that I could give him a hug and tell him Happy Birthday (It's thursday of this week) (OK I gave him cash and homemade CC cookies also) He called me this morning before his classes and said "thanks Mom, I really love you". Made all of it worth the drive and the sore rear end. God I love being a Mom. Although I saw a shirt yesterday at a BBQ place that said "OK the words you are looking for is "Yes Mom". Yep I bought it. Saving it for the summer when we both forget this mornings phone call

allaboutbaseball,

Your story made me cry. I can see myself doing the same thing without thinking twice. Was that "thanks Mom, I really love you" worth driving 3 hours there and back? Again, all together now "You bet it was".

LHPitcher ...

I still keep score when our son is pitching and we can't get to the game. Was a lot easier in the past when he was a starter because we knew when he would be on the mound. Now it appears he is going into the bullpen and we may never know when he is going to throw, tho we can be pretty sure he won't throw on back to back days pull_hair

My husband actually chews sunflower seeds ... and does he fair share of pacing ... he fortunately does NOT spit the shells on the floor but into a disposable cup. I can't get him to quit so I often go into another room ...

allabout ...

Know 100% what you mean. Hubby and I drove 21 hours (did stop to sleep) to see our son's first professional appearance ... an inning of relief ... And we were blessed to get a call from him while we were enroute that he would actually be making his first pro start 3 days later and wondered if we would be able to go to it (it was a road trip for them). As soon as he closed off the call, we called Granny to see if she could stay with our dogs a few days longer. And I know he (son) was thrilled ... makes a mom get all teary eyed, doesn't it?
