Attended a day of orientation with daughter today. One thing they discussed today in conjunction with the issue of being a helicopter parent was how technology can lend itself to this type of parenting.

The example of old they gave was if a kid was in the Busar's office and told they owed money. What would they do? They'd at least have to problem solve a bit. Now, what would they do? If like most kids, they'd take their cell phone out of their pocket and call of text mom/dad for instant direction.

The world of email, texting, IMing, etc. makes it so much easier for us to be involved in our kid's lives which I've always thought was a good thing. However, realizing that I have a tendency to be a bit controling, I do know that it has probably made me a different parent in some negative ways too.

Thought it was interesting to think about, anyway. Smile
