Youngest son's (13) season is over. Broke humerus bone and dislocated elbow during game on Sunday. Surgery needed to fix broken bone.

Injury occured while son hit a curve ball back up the middle, driving in the first run of the game. Coach sent him on to second, then called him back to first. Diving back to first, right hand ran into first baseman. Son reports that he was safe, left hand on the bag, although ump called him out.

Team went on to win the game 7 - 4.

Husband and oldest son had always told me NOT to come on the field if the boys were injured. I, of course waited by the gate (hubby not at the game) until I felt it was ok to appear on the field. He was in good hands, though. Coach, asst. coach, nurse (mom of teammate) and an EMT (dad just arriving at ballpark for his son's game after ours) were with him and kept him calm while 911 was called.

Been a rough couple of days, with lots of emotion and concern. Major thing, he is basically ok. Season is over, but not his future.

Gosh VPM....you have had a rough couple of days.....but prognosis is good....and the best thing.....he's only 13....so this probably won't impact him for too long. Know, however, how disappointed he must be.....he's just going to have to learn to be a good cheerleader now....and wait for next season!

So sorry to hear about your son. He's young and will probably bounce back quicker than you can ever imagine. Teammate of my son had something very similar happen early Feb. Compound fracture, surgery, plates etc... He is going to the Dr. this week and seems to think he might be released by the first of April!!!! It is on his catching arm and we have caught him at practice playing catch, pitching, and doing soft toss. Amazing, I'd probably still be on the couch crying because my arm hurt. With that said, it will get easier, he will probably be up and running soon. Just don't let him do too much and to do what the Dr. orders!!

So sorry the hear about your son. 13 year olds do heal rapidly, you will be shocked. Use the time to learn to keep score in dugout and learn the game from a coaching standpoint. BBfam, I know what you mean about quick recovery. My son got hit in the ribs with a fastball when he was 16 and ruptured his spleen. Out for two months. Something I am not proud of is the fact that he told the coach that the doctor said it was okay to start pitching. The doctor didn't, however, the coach let him do bullpens during the game but refused to let him into a game until he could do the running and a written release. Eight weeks later that came.

Sorry to barge in here, Ladies, but this thread title caught my eye. I'm really sorry to hear about this situation. Knowing how much our boys love this game and how hard they work at it, it's always heart-rending to picture a boy who loves his game to be sidelined, even for a short time. Here's wishing him a very speedy recovery and the heart of a lion to get it all back ASAP!!

Sorry to hear about your Son. He will hopefully heal real quick. Our oldest broke his elbow last year and was even able to pitch 5 to 6 weeks later. No where near the injury that your son has but 4 years older. He had a clean break no dislocation at all.

I understand what you said about not going on the field. I remember when my middle Son was bout 12 and I went on the field for a s****r game. he was devastated. But when they are truly hurt like your Son was I think they appreciate that. It sounds like he had some good people there to help the both of you.

Yes, it has been very rough, not much sleep, etc. Surgery is scheduled for 10:00 tomorrow morning. I know the hardests parts are yet to come, especially with the re-hab.

But, he does love this game and is the heart and soul of the team. I know with all the good wishes, thoughts, prayers and his determination that we will survive and be better for it!

Hey, the P.A. yesterday said he just might develop a nasty curve ball!!

Surgery went fine. Cast on for two weeks probably. Then a brace and a sling. At that time can think about some exercises. Doctor said didn't think rehab would be needed, but will see in two weeks. Excellent prognosis in my book.

Proudmom-Just found out that our player will be released to play on April 1st. That is just 8 weeks after he hurt himself! They are having a special guard made for his arm when he returns that will protect it while he's playing and up to bat and has a removeable piece for the elbow when pitching. I'm sure your son will heal just fine too and be back before you know it! Good luck and I am very glad to hear that surgery went well.

Coach made it in time to be in the recovery room ~ asked the doctor if my son would be able to throw a 90mph fastball ~ if he was able to before, was the reply from the doctor!!

Veryproudmom-Update for you! Our player was released from the Dr. to play on Saturday and that is just what he did. While his bat was rusty, he did great. He even dove back to first (thought about your son) and if you can believe, he pitched in the Championship game. He pitched 5 beautiful innings to help us get the win. Looks like after just a little bit of practice he will be back better than ever. So, keep your chin up. They really do heal faster than us adults can imagine.

Lafmom-it wasn't my son but a teammate of his. Very similar injury to proudmom's son, but it was good to see him back and do so well.

Sorry to hear about son's injuries, but very glad to hear the great prognosis and recoveries. It sure has been a tough year for injuries, with many of the boys suffering different serious injuries.

BBfam ~ that's great news about the first game back! Pitching and hitting both did well, way to go! Keep us posted as to his continued recovery and baseball feats!

We go back to the doctor tomorrow to see about the cast coming off! Probably will get a brace and a sling, but can begin to work that arm and elbow. Can't wait until he can play again. Hopefully, there will be someplace to play some summer ball.

More details have emerged from the injury ~ seems like the first baseball fell on him as he was coming back into first. I figured that is probably what caused the break, but anyway, doesn't really matter.

I know my heart will be in my hands the first time he has to dive back into a base. I guess I'll be okay as long as the player doesn't fall on him!!
