Ok ladies, I need your help. Today son tried on rented tuxedo for winter formal. Pants too short so it has to go back. When I was there I realized he's got a senior prom in spring and it's less expensive to buy a tux than to rent it twice. But that got me thinking..... will he ever wear a tux again in college or is it better to buy him a nice black suit that he can wear for the formals in hs and possibly in college?

In other words, do bb players in college have need of a suit ever? Thanks for your help.

First of all, he probably will not stay the same size!
Son was about 190-195 in hs (44 long), grew & put on about 10 lbs his freshman year of college. He's now a sophomore, 215lbs.(46 long) At Tulane, the team wears a suit for away games when traveling by plane (5 times a year). We just had his pants released in the rear & lengthened sleeves & pants.
So far he hasn't needed a tux...but may, if he is an escort for one of the sorority shindigs...
Hope that helps...

thanks- that info does help. I hope he doesn't stay the same size! He's currently 6'1 about 205lbs. I think an inch or two more would be nice since his older bro is 6'3. Maybe I can talk him into a black suit instead since he may need one next year.

Sorry for intruding into your forum. baseballmom is right on. Your son will grow (thickness, 'good' thickness) pretty quickly.

But he will need a suit for a handful of roadtrips and another handful of 'events' (dances, banquets, etc...) each year. To my knowledge, tuxes haven't been in the picture.

Ours just wanted (and got) a new suit for Christmas.

Agree with the idea of NOT buying a tux at this stage in a young man's development. As justbaseball indicated, he will have need for something for other events but not necessarily a tuxedo.

In college, our son had a nice navy sports jacket which he wore for road trips with dress trousers and shoes (no cargo pants, no sneakers) and the required tie. Always loved the look and had a little more flexibility than a suit, tho a nice suit for dinners etc does look nice. He did have to buy a new jacket as he matured, tho, as the arms and shoulders changed a lot. It was a lot less expensive than a suit ...

However, I would not take fashion tips from either of the guys in this picture:

Thank you! Ended up buying a black suit (on sale), slightly big, paid to have it tailored, and they'll alter it again if he grows in the next few years.

My oops, I started a new topic when I should have posted here. Sorry.

I skimmed the posts in this one but got distracted by talk of tuxes and formals and didn't realize this was where I should have asked my question.
