Was the offical first practice date moved back for next year..2005? Is it true that HS baseball will have 2 or 3 weeks to get ready? If so, it isn't right!! Pitchers won't be ready. Teams won't be ready. I would like to see baseball be treated like HS football and basketball as to practices. Football and Basketball is tearing up our summer teams.(lack of players) Open gyms and weight lifting in demand. Football coaches and basketball coaches telling the boys that they better show up for weight lifting and open gym or else.. So we loose boys during the summer in our Babe Ruth league and Legion team. Yes, the summer coaches has talked with the school and the football and basketball coaches about this. They tell you one thing and do another. Frustrating for baseball coaches and the kids. I guess its a peeve of mine.. who else is in the same boat?
I have experienced first hand how difficult it is for high school baseball players to get ready for their season. Most schools will have Basketball and Football as their priority because of the gate receipts. It's always about $$. More and more athletes can't play more than one sport because of selfish coaches and their own personal agendas. Kids get no support from these coaches. If it wasn't for the players individual desire and parents who help with getting these kids ready (conditioning, weight training, batting cages, etc.) a lot of players in our area wouldn't be ready at all to start playing ball in the Spring. Summer baseball programs are almost a waste of time because of the pressure some kids have to be ready for the other sports that there interested in. The fact is high school baseball has almost become the '*******' child of high school athletics, especially in the South Bend School system.

It's even worse in college .Look at the number of D1 football scholarships allowed compared to baseball .It's totally rediculous. Some D1 schools have actually had to drop baseball programs due to title 9.Its now easier for kids to actually attend junior colleges on scholarships than D1 schools because of the number of scholarships a junior college can give.
