He's a big kid, 12yo/5'9"/145 lbs, and I'm wondering if this is going to be too light this season (13U AABC). He was generating some unreal bat/ball speed yesterday in front toss BP using the aluminum, absolutely killin' it. Is there an appreciable gain to be had in a -5 drop at this point? I understand the physics, my concern is that he's going to see better, faster pitching this year and I don't want to slow him down. Thanks, OHdad
I hate to tell you to invest in a new bat when next year he will be moving to a big barrel -5 anyway, but I would go ahead and do it. You may see if anyone you know may have a -7 or even -5 you can use or even try ebay or play it again sports for a used bat. You can get some good deals on very good bats for just the reason I gave "having to switch to a big barrel -5". I think the -5 or -7 will give him a leg up on next season and won't hurt him this year if he's already swinging wood in the cages.
