Congratulations to the top twenty-nine vote getters that were emailed/write ins/tallied for the 2008 Maryland State Amateur Baseball Coaches Pre-Season All Star Team this week.

As reported at last night's VA-DC-MD Metro MSASB HS Baseball Qtrly Telcon, estimates for the total number of MSABC HS member coaches voting appears to be in the 60-65 range (out of 100 members). Estimates reported for total number of Maryland (public and private) High Schools represented at the MSABC Dec 2007 Winter Meeting (and the most popular of all the meetings) appear to be in the 34-40 range.

(Bear Note: From past MSABC meetings, more than one HS Coach from the same school has been able to vote, attend the meetings, support the head coach and represent his MD HS.)

The MSABC Preseason Awards Banquet will be held a weekend evening in February 2008 at the Warehouse at Camden Yards. Final selections will be made available to the public by MSABC, at the 2008 MSABC Banquet to be held in the Warehouse at Camden Yards, and is an enjoyable evening. Allow me to be redundant. The MSABC Preseason All-State Team will be introduced at that time.

As reported last, the following 35 MD Public HS as associated with the MSABC nominations process (and seeking verification) were represented
[Bear Q/L: and nearly double from a 4% representation from years past.]

Thirty-Four MD Public HS
Arundel
Bel Air
Calvert HS
Carroll (Nor)
Centennial
Chesapeake
Clarksburg
Decatur (So)
Delaney
Dorchester (Nor)

Williamsport
Wright (C.M.)

(Not known, yet a frequent HSBBW poster, friend, and Eastern Tech Head Coach may have not attended the MSABC Dec 2007 winter meeting, and we hope for his quick recovery if applicable)

In years past, MSABC recognized 30-33 MSABC Pre-Season MD HS players at the MSABC Banquet, thus my apologies for such omissions as the information was not available last night....(Thanks Paul D)

Should a lover and fan of baseball and a DC-VA-MD Metro HS Baseball MSASB supporter be interested if a MSABC MD HS 2007 player was nominated [Bear Q/L of 61 MD HS players, yet not within the list of MD players & HS named above] for the 2008 MSABC Preseason All-State Team, please send email, identifying yourself, your email address, and HS player.

cheers

Was curious why there arn't more high school coaches voting. I'm sure all these players are very deserving but how can you have a true list if you don't here from all the high schools in the state.

Are all the high school varsity baseball coaches eligible to vote? Not trying to take anything away from these players. It's just lately in the Maryland forum i've seen alot of arguing about who the best players are.

Bear,

All is well.. My real job as a police officer kept me from the meeting. I second the fact that congrats to all nominated. The process I feel is the best at the given time. It is what it is. I look forward to seeing the next great class from Maryland making there mark. Merry Christmas to all.....

I heard at a Christmas Party last week, Spalding's Coach Miller removed two names from the list of top vote getters. (ouch)

I don't think it matters who was on or who was removed. I think we should be patient and see who is on the final list. That is the only list that matters.

A number of years ago, when I coached at Atholton, I attended all these meetings and clinics, and participated in the pre-season voting. After my first year, I advocated for terminating this pre-season list. It does more harm than good. Too many coaches couldn't attend for one reason or another, and it seemed as though kids were not nominated if their coaches didn't show up. Due to rules that prohibit high school coaches from coaching summer baseball (believe it is the 80% rule), it always seemed like many of the coaches didn't have much feel for the other kids around the state, much less their own county. A few did, but many did not.

It seems as though a more accurate list could be created by members of this forum?

Larry....Well put. I agree. I had a similar opinion when at Good Counsel HS eons ago. I remember
disagreeing (it was really having another opinion) with your best friend Smile at Arundel HS, when he said (and outspokingly) "All [GC]is doing is hurting the kids." Did you know it is taboo to voice an opinion with these public coaches who have tongue in cheeks for the other kids around the state, much less their own county.

TrepFan -

Can you please just let it go? As has been hashed out NUMEROUS times before, PG is PROJECTING (the kid has POTNETIAL and has shown promise). It's very obvious you have an agenda with one particular player. However, that one player's '07 performance would be borderline to make this team even if he was eligible - which common sense says he shouldn't be.

- Didn't make first or second team all-met
- Didn't get invited to try out for the Junior Olympics

What don't you understand? PG's list and the MSABC list have DIFFERENT criteria! POTENTIAL vs PAST PERFORMANCE.

Let me start by saying, I have no knowledge of who he speaks of... But all responses point to Silverstein. That young man is in a class of his own. A true bonfide top flight prospect. However the whole issue is although a Maryland resident he DOES NOT play for a Maryland school. Definately a great ball player no matter how you look at it....

I think that it is great that all these kids made it to the the list. But there are a lot of very good ball players in Maryland and the last time I was at a baseball game it was a team sport not one player. With all the great baseball coachs and minds in Maryland why don't you all get togeather and promote all the great teams and players in the state to schools so alot more people out there know about all of the kids. Alot of people do not have the means to send there kid to every showcase that is out there. May be a little more help from there high coachs would help. May be the MSABC could from a task group to promote Maryland High School Baseball to schools across the country. Just my two cents worth.
