Danny Hultzen, Maryland resident and UVA Number One (1) pitcher is scheduled to pitch tonight on ESPNU against the number one seed college team and number one rated pitcher in the US.....tonight at 7PM. This is a regional baseball game competition towards the college world series. Hultzen attended St. Albans High School in Washington DC and as a freshman this year has earned ACC Rookie of the Year, All-ACC Team and a spot on the US National Team.

I had also thought, and hoped, this would be the case.

This morning's Richmond Times-Dispatch, however, indicated that Robert Morey might get the start. Which surprised me, to say the least -- no offense to Robert Morey of course, but Danny's been their # 1 all season long.

What's your source as to him being tonight's starter? It surely wouldn't surprise me to find that the RTD got it wrong (again!).

Actually I think San Diego State is the number 3 seed in the region. UVA is #2 and Irvine is #1.

From the UVA website: (it looks like Morey)

Virginia is slated to start RHP Robert Morey (2-0, 3.25 ERA) tonight, while San Diego State will counter with RHP Stephen Strasburg (13-0, 1.24), who is one of the top pitching prospects in the nation.

Going 2 for 4 against the number one college pick ever nothing to sneeze at.

Pretty solid night for Keith Werman, too. Not a Maryland product, I know, but from where I sit, you guys up around DC all look alike!

Had to like how the Morey kid threw----great move on Coach O'Connors part---Morey matched Strasburg kid pitch for pitch AND HE GOT THE WIN---Now SDSU is in the losers bracket and Strasburg should be done for the weekend---I cannot see him coming back in this weekends event

Bottom line-- some great baseball with some even greater underlying stories

More accolades for Danny Hultzen. Very impressive!

"IRVINE, Calif. – Danny Hultzen (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) pitched a masterful 7.1 shutout innings and the Virginia offense broke through for five runs in the fifth and sixth innings as the Cavaliers shut out top-ranked UC Irvine, 5-0, Saturday night at the 2009 NCAA Irvine Regional at Anteater Ballpark in Irvine, Calif. UCI is the top seed in the regional and the No. 6 national seed, while UVa is the No. 2 seed in the regional."

UVA was placed in a tough regional across the country and they are producing.

First time all year UCI has been shut out.

I was surprised Danny didn't get the ball Friday night, but at least this one was on TV continuously so you could actually get to see him work.

Hultzen --- has been absolutely terrific both as a batter. pitcher, and fielder. Hultzen lives in Maryland --- amazing he did not make the All- Maryland Team -- oh that is right.....I forgot the excuse that he attended a school in DC.

Hultzen beats the number one pitcher in US and number one seed in regionals. Hultzen is a Maryland resident but was not considered for the All-Maryland Team because of a rule developed by the Maryland Coaches to ensure ample representation of their players. -- Goes to show that the best Maryland players are not represented by the All-Maryland Team.....

IRVINE, Calif. 2 seed in the regional.
Virginia (45-12-1) advances to the regional championship game at 11 p.m. ET Sunday. The Cavaliers will face the winner of the UC Irvine-San Diego State game which precedes the championship game at 7 p.m. ESPNU and Comcast SportsNet each will have live coverage of both games. The winner of the UCI-SDSU game will have to beat the Cavaliers twice in order to move on the Super Regionals.

Hultzen (9-1) went a career-high 7.1 innings and pitched into the eighth inning for the first time in his career. He allowed six hits and just one walk while striking out three. Tyler Wilson (So., Midlothian, Va.) pitched an inning before Matt Packer (Jr., Germantown, Tenn.) tossed the final two-thirds of an inning as the Cavaliers became the first team to shut out the Anteaters this season.

Wow TrepFan you are amazing....you still won't let it go. You have some major issues. Congrats to Danny H. for a great season, and a great performance Saturday night vs the #1 ranked team in the nation.....I am sure all he could think about at the end of the night Saturday, was about not making the All MD team in HS. I guess T. Hibbs should be mad that he didn't make the Maryland Juco 1st team all conference. He lives in MD, but goes to school in Florida. Some parents are amazing...

Virginia’s Danny Hultzen (Bethesda, Maryland resident) has been named to the 2009 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team, as chosen by Collegiate Baseball.

Hultzen has been a two-way standout for the Cavaliers this season. The first ACC Freshman of the Year in Virginia history, Hultzen has seen time at pitcher, first base, left field and designated hitter this year. On the mound, he has a 9-1 record with a 2.01 ERA in 15 games (14 starts). In 80.2 innings, Hultzen has 90 strikeouts, which is a Virginia freshman record.

At the plate, Hultzen has a .335 batting average – tops among ACC freshmen. He also has three home runs and 33 runs batted in. Hultzen has been named to the Irvine All-Regional Team (pitcher) as well as the ACC All-Tournament Team (Utility/DH) this year.

Terp_Pride,

I assume you know that Trepfan is not Hultzen's parent. If you didn't, now you do.

I will never understand why someone has to write something snarky in response to a post that really only congratulates a boy for a job well done.

Midlo,

I know that Trep Fan in not Hultzan's Dad. He is the father of another UVA player who played at a DC PRIVATE SCHOOl. Yet he constantly for the past year has been going on and on about kids like his son who weren't recognized by Maryland State High School Association. I can understand bringing it up once, but the guy has brought it up in probably 30 different topics over the last year.
Midlo that is where that comment came from fyi, and I think it was extremly justified. Again congrats to Danny H.

Trep, one of us knows something the other one doesn't. As TR's note references, our whole coaching staff got canned. I personally think our pitching coach got scapegoated, but I can see that you'd want the new head guy to pick his own staff.

Unless you know who our coaches are going to be ... did I miss a press release?

In other words, to answer TR, no idea. Just internet gossip, no info from anyone in a position to know.

The first word of the firings came via an e-mail from the AD's office to the players, which my son forwarded to me. Then a release posted on the school's official athletic web site. I suspect that's how we'll get the news when a new guy is picked.

But I also suspect that at least some of the guys our AD would like to interview are still kind of busy with their current jobs. For one more weekend at least.

I did not realize the "whole" staff received the boot. Really sorry to hear that --- I thought all three gents were total gentleman (when we met them) and basically a class act. Goes to show that good guys sometimes fall last. "Palmer" must really be disappointed since he was such a well known and successful legacy.
