El Dorado spotted Calvert Hall a 3 run lead in the top of the third, then scored 4 in the bottom of the third and 4 in the bottom of the 4th and went on to win
11 -6.

Mike Dillon started for Calvert Hall and was relieved by Mike Trionfo in the 5th.

Kevin Lingerman had an RBI double and Patrick Blair hit a Rocket for a 2 run homer over the left field wall.

El Dorado (5-5) was the better team. They got men on base and put pressure on Calvert Hall with their speed. Calvert Hall had trouble throwing runners out stealing, fielding bunts, and balks.

After a week of 80 degree solid baseball, Calvert Hall should return to Maryland a much improved team and will.

The purpose of these early season tournaments for the East Coast teams is to get exposure to playoff atmosphere baseball early on, to prepare for the upcoming season.

St. John's played well and won their first game. They play a tough (#8 ranked nationally) team in Vista Murrieta, Ca. tomorrow.

James River Va. (#6 ranked team nationally) lost a one run lead in the bottom the 7th to Esperanza, Ca. 2-1

I was at the Calvert Hall game tonight (in California). Calvert Hall lost 11-6. The game was out of reach after the 5th inning.

I thought Calvert Hall hit the ball pretty good. They may have had some jitters at first but had the support of their loyal fans.

They may have been surprised by the speed of the
game, and this being a very early season game for them contributed to them having a tough time defensively.

Southern California teams like to put pressure on by bunting and forcing you to make good defensive plays, that take time in practice to prepare for.

After finishing the game at 10:00 last night, they need to wake up early for a 10:00 a.m. game today against a team from Santa Cruz, Ca. called Aptos who came in to the tournament with a 10 - 1 record, but also lost the first game.

The boys seem to be making the most of their trip to California, and will bring home some good memories and a much improved baseball team, that will be very tough to play for the other teams in Maryland.

Calvert Hall won their last game to finish 1-3 for the tournament.

St. Johns lost their last 2 to finish 2-2.

All of the 4 top 10 Nationally ranked teams lost at least 1 game.

Unranked Crespi went 4-0 to win it. They knocked off a very good #19 ranked Jupiter Florida team who went 3-1 and also #15 ranked Orange Lutheran who went 3-1. Crespi also beat co-host Esperanza and #6 ranked St. Johns.

Considering where CH and SJ are in their season, seems they made a good showing for themselves.

How would they have done had they been in mid-season form? Is it possible to extrapolate out that far?

St. Johns couldn't throw their ace this week(Silverstein), this could of made a huge difference in game 3. But St. Johns has nothing to be ashamed of, they represented this area with class and respect.

The tournament format allowed only one team to go 4-0, and that turned out to be Crespi. Three teams finished 3-1. Conversely, three teams went 1-3, while only one went 0-4. The other 8 finish 2-2 in some fashion.

It is a tough tourney not only due to the competition but also the fact that you're playing 4 games in 4 days, which tests your pitching depth. Most teams rely on 2-3 arms, though St. John's may be a notable exception. Runner up Orange Lutheran of California has the dominant Gerritt Cole, who won his start easily, but they also had a terrific lefty whom they abused mightily, pitching him deep into both Monday's and Thursday's games. They left him in on Thursday long after the outcome was no longer in doubt. Shame on them.

Most teams also make a point of making sure that all who make the trip see the field for substantial playing time. That can skew outcomes. I know James River fell behind in one game and emptied the bench, of which I certainly approve, though it turned the game into a route, which looks bad on paper anyway.

I think the eastern teams also came in at a disadvantage, since most had played only 2-3 games, while the CA teams had many more under their belts. Their pitchers were ready to go 7 in some cases, while few of the East Coast teams could pull that off.

We enjoyed the trip and I think for the most part the teams learned they could play with anyone, though to be honest I think Calvert Hall struggled quite a bit. Were it not for a 2-out, bottom of the 7th clutch hit by a freshman, they could have been the lone 0-4 team.
