Let me tell you about this young man...tremendous talent. He was a Columbia Red when he was 15. He pitched the first game of the season opening doubleheader. Pitched a gem. Our 15-16 coach decided he was done for the day and could recover during the second game. He was going to be their starting 3B when he didn't pitch. Well, he and his parents went nuts. They didn't understand why the coach wanted to give him some rest after throwing about 85 pitches. They promptly quit the team. The next season, after discussing it with the manager, he came back to play as a 16 year old. This time, he pitched the first game of the opening DHer, then DHed the second game. Same thing, they went nuts, quit the team, and we never heard from them again. It was the craziest thing I ever heard of, and I felt bad for our coach. The 15-16 team won the Dizzy Dean World Series that year, but could have reached even greater heights perhaps with his talent. Oh well!

Just to clear this bs from the authors in this thread regarding the Montgomery's.

The Montgomery's, after examining the situation, got as far away from
Young Harris College and the Columbia Reds as possible.......

May my friend Paula, rest in peace!

As usual you speak without knowing what you are talking about. I understand it comes from sour grapes. You weren't there because you weren't invited to be there, and it still bothers you to this day! Let it go.

To keep things headed in a positive direction, Coach Griffen at Okaloosa-Walton said he was pleased to have him.

Lets hope he continues to improve.

Gee whiz,

I thought I had a baseball friend who helped out with a hugh baseball winter clinic (ie 500 HS players) I directed with my other baseball partners (ie Alex, Randy, Jimmy & John) Was that over 10 years ago? Seems like yesterday. I thought that baseball friend's name is Larry Thompson.

I recall hearing this same Larry Thompson, coaching a summer club of HS kids following the departure of it's founding father and friend 'Columbia' John.....who headed back to the warmer climates of New Mexico to remanage a team named the Bears. (I recall his son playing for my friend Lew Jenkins all four years at St. Mary's College.)

Just saw Alex the other day getting thru his follow list yet stopping by at Wingate Univ.

I also had dinner with Randy (and Paul D) up at Cherry Hill NJ, this year, while travelling with my friend Coach Gottlieb.

Sour grapes? Bother's me to this day?
I'm confused or their must be two Larry Thompson's!

I thought I devoted a majority of my last six summers helping with the local American Legion, and the local colleges with a two year hiatus to scout for the Marlins.

Wait, now I remember, that included a three year span when both of my 'kids' (ie Matt Montgomery and Casey played Legion as 15 y/o, and 16 y/o and 17 y/o.)

You are correct, sir, I was not there.
However, I do recall being invited six years ago (?), however declined due to my health issues (just had my first of two heart attacks.....)

Good Luck to you, though,

Regards
Bear
