Okay we are a couple weeks into the HS Season. Any surprises?
1. Teams who have done better than expected, or 2. Players that have improved from what you expected. Nothing wrong identifying a good player, even if their team might not be doing well.
I will start: Private Schools: Dematha - I was suspicious of their pitching, yet Nick Pierce has stepped it up along with Tim Hammond, and with Ryan Stamp being the quiet leader, they have done better than I expected.
Public Schools Old Mill - Just saw them play. Although it was against a weaker opponent, I liked the way they were hitting the ball back up the middle on a slower pitcher. Derek Goughenour has changed the dimension of this team. He must be batting over 800.
Broadneck - Another team agressive at the plate and seem pretty consistent through the line up. Sorry did not know the names of a lot of the players.
Both teams have the power hitter and several singles type hitters. Ought to be a good game when they play.
Players 1. Nick Pierce - Nice arm slot, movement on his fast ball, and nice slider. Nice future expected for this guy.
2. Zach Lucas - Freshman at Broadneck who stepped in varsity rotation and done quite well.
really no surprise to me but Paul VI is playing very well, deserving of Washington Post #2 ranking. Good Counsel and O'Connell have classy coaches and players, good to see.

I want to make note of how far Eddie Bach of Atholton High School has progressed in the past year. In his last start, the LHP pitched a complete game no-hitter, with 16K's vs Defending 3A state champion Centennial HS. Eddie has gone from the low 80's to topping at 92 MPH. For the season he is 4-0, 49K's, and allowed 2 earned runs in 27 innings pitched. Eddie is a great kid has worked hard to get to this stage in his development.
Larry Eddie has hit a top of 91-92 consistantly at The Frozen Ropes Training Center throughout his winter workouts. At the Centennial game I had Eddie at topping at 91 on the JUGS gun. I was with Ty Brown and Dean Albany of the Orioles who had Eddie topping at 87-88 in his 1st game at River Hill using the Stalker gun. I can tell you for the 1st 5 innings against Centennial HS he was throwing significantly harder. This was quite evident when he struck out 13 of his 1st 17 batters he faced against a very good fastball hitting team. He tailed off at the end due to the fact he threw about 99% fastballs. For the last two innings I had Eddie at 84-87.
I guess being away from the game for a few years has clouded my ability to "see" velocity. If he was throwing in the low 90's, that is great! As an AHS alum, I love it when my "home boys" are doing well!!!!

Havre de Grace has surprisingly been undefeated their 1A division and with wins outside their division against 3A Fallston, 2A Aberdeen and tying 3A Bel Air. They had one loss against North Harford which HdG came out strong ahead in the 3rd 4/0 when good coaching on NH end called for bunting put their players on. Score ended 6/4. HdG has pitching, Paisley, Spooner, Holiday and a defensive catcher Justin Lloyd who knows his pitchers well. I see them going to the States.

Bear How is the wing!!! Hopefully you are following your rehab program of 12 oz curls!! Rather than compete with legion and travel programs, Frozen Ropes is going to run a Prospect Enhancement Program PEP team beginning in August and ending 1 Nov. The team will basically be for HS varsity players ages 15-17 and play a showcase schedule. Also included will be individual training sessions, college consultation/video, visual mechanics etc. year!! Lets get together and identify some players for the Classic at your convenience.
