Sorry to drop in on this forum as a Chicagoan, but I just read something on the Comcast homepage that's got me scratching my head. A school district in Attleboro, Mass has banned the playing of tag during recess, along with tag football and any other "contact" activity at their elementary schools. They claim that due to the possiblity of injury they are concerned about lawsuits. Can this be for real? We're talking about TAG. Who grows up not playing this or other related games in elementary school. I know that the NE is different in many ways from the rest of the country, but can someone explain this to me?What's next, no baseball in HS because someone who gets hit by a pitch will sue the pitcher or the school? Don't laugh, first it was dodgeball, now TAG and next.....

I knew kids from that area (in the 60's) and they were tough blue collar kids. They must be shaking their heads. I have a son who teaches phys ed and is constantly talking about how out of shape the kids are and have no interest in anything physical.Remember when "gym" class was not co-ed and we actually had boxing and wrestling? We used to play dodgeball with a hard softball. Tag was for 5 year olds.

And we were proud of the bruises we had remaining after the game---It meant that you could "take it" !!!! and you were respected

You are right TR, it's a development thing. I just cannot imagine a parent not teaching their child toughness and confidence, combined with respect. I also think that this website offers young parents something to consider in making decisions on their childs direction. You and alot of us have gone through the deal, mistakes included and now see attitudes that we never had. Are we correct in our philosophy, "toughness and respect is the foundation for adulthood", "don't ever let anyone push you around",? confidence starts in many ways and confidence in your self physically is a big one.

itsrosy, as far as the NE being different. I think the biggest difference ( I have lived in the NE, mid-west and been on the left coast alot) is that we are very neighborhood type of people. We live in a fast moving population, crazy weather (like your's in Ill.) and are competitive and proud of heritage and hometown. That is probably the same all over, but an absolute in the NE. I grew up in NJ and the west coast was the Delaware river, NYC was and is the city.

i think that with budget cutbacks being what they are and all.they must have thought they could cut back on the person who keeps track of permenent records.you know the one who keeps track of running with scissors,with a lollipop in you mouth and swimming within that hour after you eat.and now tag.save money where you can.

Now some kid will be "it" forever .
