I don’t want to get into the whole H.S. summer ball vs. travel ball argument here, been there and done that.

Could someone please just direct me to the link where it states that summer ball is not mandatory for making the spring team. I have tried a search and can’t find it. I appreciate the help.

If you want to know why I am asking please do so by pm.

I would imagine that whether or not is necessary depends upon the desires and philosophies of each coach.

Hmmm... I don't think there's any such rule about mandatory play in the summer to make the team in the spring. HOWEVER, I think the reality is coaches can make cuts without explanations, so if he's saying show up or else, that may be a good indication that he has his own personal rules that he enforces.

Our coach always told players that summer ball was their tryout for the spring team, but we didn't exactly have a glut of players, so he basically had to keep kids regardless of what they did in the summer. If he'd had more players trying out he may have had better luck with the somewhat empty threat.

I will tell you that we had a player cut from a winter sport team and the coach told him it was specifically because he did not participate during the summer. Parents went to the AD - end of story, boy was on the team. He still didn't play, but he was on the team.

According to the IHSA Policies on their web site

Section 3.15 is about Special Provision for Summer Participation.
"3.151 Participation by high school students in summer programs must be voluntary and in no way be an actual or implied prerequisite
for membership on a high school team."

I see nothing wrong with cutting a player for not showing up during the summer with few exceptions. If two players are close to equal in talent and everything but one shows up in the summer and the other doesn't, it would seem pretty easy to say who should be on the team and who shouldn't, right?
