I was wondering where info for list comes from. I selfishly/proudly thought my son deserved to be on the list for pitchers. I know only a couple of kids on that list had similar stats from 03 - heck, his numbers were right in line with kids on all-state team. The really odd thing is a fellow teammate made one of the lists as a pitcher (he does deserve to be on the list) but was a #3 last season with numbers nowhere near my son's who was the #1. I guess its pointless to get bent out of shape over things like this - the Trib or Sun Times have never given anyone a scholarship or got anyone drafted. However, sometimes you see things that really make you wonder what is going on. I'm now questioning some things that just seem odd, guess you never know.

Tar - always enjoy your posts and insights. Not sure how question about player list translated to a discussion of Ill vs. Fla talent. I've seen on this site often the "stats are meaningless" discussion. With respect to batting averages your right numbers can be all over the place and mean little if your facing poor competition. With pitchers it's a little different. A pitcher who will go on to be successful at a d1 will flat out dominate (12-17 k's per game and low era) if he's pitching way out in the sticks and a stud in a large city or solid "suburban area" may have a bit more modest #'s. Bottom line is era will be low and k to bb ratio will be real high. If a kid pitches in a competitive area then stats are meaningful. Mine threw almost exclusively last year against AA teams with 34, 25, 24, and 20 + wins. The one game he threw against a "normal team" was 1 hitter with 15 k's. You shouldn't question level of play without knowing what it is. All we can do in Il is play best we can. By the way, last summer with Upper Deck Cougars we played solid national competition. 5-2 at Florida Junior Olympics and 6-2 at CABA World Series in East Cobb Ga. Son did ok - meaningless stats were 7-0 record, 33 ip, 6 runs, 37 k's and 3 walks. I was just making point I thought his name could of been on list and way to back that up is with performance against good competition. I've been around long enough to know difference in competition levels and make talent judgements accordingly. Point was he had big time numbers vs. big time competition and I was hoping he'd get recognized for it-also has some of the "tools" they desire at next level. Enough on this subject - it's just difficult for a kid to get much attention in certain situations and I occasionally tire of the self-promotion we must do in baseball.

Tar - sorry I got defensive. Understood your points and they made sense as always. I picked bad time to come on here and respond, just got back from teams 2nd ugly loss in a row. Things not going so well with team thus far. Anyways, we'll be with UDC again. Good luck to you and LL. Got a chance to know the coaches a little, great baseball guys and an excellent organization.
