After bringing on board seven 2009 recruits that were all in the PBR Top 150, SIU has already received verbal commitments from six 2010 PBR Top 150 recruits and it is still only August! Keep an eye on that program.

Heartland has 10 in the PBR top 150 I think. I don't have my copy handy, but if it's not exact, it's close.

By my count, Heartland has 6 players from the PBR Top 150 from 2009 and has one verbal commitment, so far, from 2010.

Nobody works harder than Coach Metzger at Heartland in signing players, but it is not an equal comparision. At a D1 school, you only have 11.7 scholarships to work with across four different classes. That is why it is remarkable what SIU has accomplished so far this summer.

Heartland will sign many more quality players for 2010 but they are restricted only by the school's budget not by the low number of total scholarships that the NCAA allows. In addition, Heartland can take more risks in signing borderline students because they don't have to adhere to the 11.7 scholarship limit.

If you compare SIU to the other Division 1 public schools in the state, you will have to be impressed.

Saw Coach Henderson scouting at the Under Armour game at Wrigley.

My time at SIU in the late 60's were 6 of the best years of my life, if I remember correctly! Maybe it was only 4 years? LOL

Go Salukis!

I don't have the magazine with me, but off the top of my head it is Motteshead, Mistrada, Lipp, Levy, and Razo. That's 5, but htere may be more than one other I missed.

Respectfully, are you saying it is easier to recruit top players at a JUCO than at a D1 school?

Not nervous at all. I think the statute of limitations has long passed, thankfully!

Brett Mauss should also be included on your list of 2009 recruits. I believe that there are advantages for recruiting for D1 and for a JUCO. It depends on the player and his circumstances. D1 schools certainly are more cautious regarding ensuring academic eligibility because of the roster and scholarship limitations.

I am looking at the PBR with Krol on the cover. The top 150 also includes Heartland players Corey Walden, Andy Burns and Nathan Sopena. So it's 9 unless some of them dropped out in the most recent addition.

I'm looking at the most recent edition with Nick Tindall on the front. Incidentally, Tindall was also a SIU recruit but went to the Twins in the MLB draft.

Don't get me wrong. I am all for the Salukis. My wife and sister went there. I was just pointing out how well a JUCO that is only 3 years old did in recruiting. You pointed out a D1 school had the PBR guys as a positive, which it is, and I pointed out so did the JUCO. It was a compliment to Heartland, not a knock on SIU.

I certainly have no problem with Heartland as well. It is definitely a great option for several kids in our area and how can you not like the coach.

Coach Callahan is one of the really good guys in the college baseball business. Our experiences when he was recruiting Junior, were nothing but positive. He was direct, honest, sincere, and had a genuine interest in making sure we understood the process, and having realistic expectations.

I was so impressed with Coach Callahan, that after Junior made his commitment to his current school, not SIU, I wrote the AD at SIU and told him how impressed we were with their coach.

Junior had many coaches and schools contact him. That was the only letter I wrote after the recruiting process was over.

Coach Callahan is one of the really good guys in college baseball.

Expect that this adventure is going to be difficult. It is going to be hard. And expect to win.

In today's Tribune Business section there is an article aobout someone using the same drug and couldn't get insurance to pay for the same reason as Coach Callahan. I wish him the best.
To have cancer and have it financially ruin you because insurance won't pay should not happen to people. And these are people who HAVE health insurance.

Our experience was very similar!
My Son was recruited by SIU-C also, and Coach Cal and Hendu are 2 class guys!
My Son signed elsewhere, but I have stayed in touch with both Coaches regarding Coach Cal's progress.

Would love to see him back in the dugout next year!

I was a grateful bird dog for Coach Cal for a few years, some years ago. He was always a gentleman, and that's why trying to do something to give back to SIU was so gratifying.

Cal is a man of faith, and I'll be praying for him, especially during Thanksgiving and the soon upon us Christmas Holidays.
