Our local area newspaper publishes stats on area players Fridays during the district season...I'm sure other newspapers do the same. Our coach just doesn't seem to take the time to send in our kids stats which really aggravates alot of us parents. The stats have now been reported for two Fridays (today is second). I really thought our kids would make it in there but no! We should have at least one player on the list because of his BA. Any suggestions on how you might approach the coach to ask him what's up?

...my observation is that some coaches make a conscious decision not to post this information because they don't want the other coaches to have that information about the team.
...my other observation is that some of them are just unconscious.

I don't think our coach wants to keep our stats from the other coaches but sometimes we do think he is unconscious I'm going to give him one more week before I say anything just to give him the benefit of the doubt...

Stats in the newspaper are only for the parents. I agree with FO, I personally don't want to see my son's or the team's stats in the newspaper. Why help the opposing coaches with a scounting report. A pitcher's ERA is one thing, but batting stats is completely another.

SouthpawPop Not to be argumentative, and i surely don't say this in a mean-spirited manner- but, I disagree.
Sure, I agree that Moms and Pops and Uncles and such like to see 'Billy Bob's' name in the paper, but I can guarantee you that the boys look for it every week.
I have a friend who publishes a web site for his h.s. team and those kids look it over after every game. Of course, he tells a story of each game and they all like to see their name in print.
Okay, so the other coach sees that Billy Bob is hitting .435 and Billy Clyde is hitting .286 ad infinitum. What's he gonna do different when he sees that? He's still gotta send his 9 out there to beat 'em.
I guess my main point is that for most high school athletes; this is the end of the line. I say- put their name in lights every chance you get. The bigger the better.
If I was involved with a coach who was a 'goober' and couldn't get around to providing this info to the local paper; I'd volunteer to do it for him.

sure the stats are for parents but our newspaper uses these to name all area players, etc...they are based purely on the players stats and they only post those with the highest BA etc and not the whole team...yes it is a status thing to say you made the All South Plains team and get a patch for your letter jacket and the kids DO look each week...as I stated earlier, I'm going to give him one more week before I say anything - even if it is to volunteer to fax it in but the thing is he bought a new stats software so he could keep up with our stats better! Guess I'll just wait till next Friday to blow a gasket except by then we'll have 3 district games behind us!

He might not want them put in because he feels(like i do) kids don't need to be worrying about stats. When kids start worrying about personal stats, the team suffers. Besides high school stats are so innacurate, some coaches try to boost their players up while others are real tough on their kids. I agree that players should be given recognition for playing well, but let it be in a different format.

Some coaches do not post stats because of certain players that are playing. They do not want parents calling because of stats that bear out the truth of players that perform and players that do not. I believe stats are very important, and should be made public. When we coached highschool ball it was very important for are staff, because it helped us not only in line up changes, but let us know who was performing on the hill as well as at the plate.

sure the kids shouldn't worry about their stats but stats are a tool that should be used to help the team...baseball is a team sport but its made up of individuals - 9 on the field and the 2-3 coaches in the dugout! our coach purchased new software to keep up with stats...if you ain't gonna post 'em or use 'em then why spend the $$ on the software! also, what other benchmark are you going to use to recognize a player? if not stats, then it is based on what? OH! the radio announcer seams to have the stats? who's giving those to him? not even our local newspaper is given the stats...well, I gotta quit cause I'm just getting riled up!
