As I sit here watching the snow fall this morning. I remember some of the games we played in bad weather.
Back in the coach pitch days we had a game when a cold front came thru and within a very short time it was sleeting!! One poor little boy didn't even bring a jacket and of course his mom wasn't there either!! We went home a got a coat for him and waited there for his mom to show up. That same boy may be the starting QB at a large 5A school as a SOPH. this year!!!

There was another game a few years later where the temp. dropped into the 30,s and the wind was howling and yet they kept on playing.

Similiar game to that one when they were 13 in a tournament in Norman OK 10:00 at night temp dropped into the low 30's 20 mph wind!!! Absolutly BRUTAL!!!! But yet we played on and won the game

Let's hear some of your bad weather stories

2002 - Frisco JV was playing Plano West. It was about 30 with wind. My son pitched 3 innings and could only throw FB because he could not feel his fingers.

Since he is not a power pitcher we were lucky that it was also too cold for batters to swing.

Remember Ark Park???
Several years ago... forcast was for thunderstorms "in the area"... 8Pm game, on a school night...

Well, it came a gully washer, lightening, wind, temp drop, and all that... Finally, Blue called for postponement... Drenched & cold... we all waited...they Went back out, resumed play about 9:30... Now "just a light rain... but still lightening...
Some "goofus" didn't want to have to refund the fee...
Let's just electrocute the teams, instead!!!

10pm or so, play resumed for the 2nd time, by now, there was a mote around the pitchers mound!!! The pitcher was literally slipping off, couldn't keep his footing...
Finally, our Coach said "Enough!!!"

The director changed his "rules" of play after a letter from an attorney over that one!

I can tell you that this year is the most rain (and as a result the most days of practice/games missed) in the four years that I have been a college coach. We have now had two series rained out, we miss a practice on the field due to rain about once a week, and I have not run my sprinkler system since December 15th or so. Wettest spring I have been a part of in my short career.

Seems to me that the start of baseball season is always interupted by rain and this year will be no difference. The southern half of the state of Oklahoma is blanketed in snow that came up from Texas and the northern half is expereincing 30 degree weather. Looks like a slow start again.

My spring break experience: Playing when it was cold(at least 20 degrees) with small flakes of snow falling and when you hit the ball your hands hurt so bad. This was spring break with all my non playing buddies were on the beach playing frisbee. But, you know what, I'd rather be playing baseball again than throwing the frisbee on the beach. From what I know now, I'd give anything to play again no matter what the weather.

Here's to a sunny and festive baseball season!!

Baseballmom,
I DO remember that tournament!!! That was the worst decision making I have ever seen!! Wasn't that a Triple Crown event?? The tournament director's team was in the drivers seat of their division if i remember correctly and that was a major factor in the decesion making! My team voted not to go to another Arc Park event after that and we never did!!!

Let's ask the UIL if we could swap baseball & football season. It's too cold to play baseball in Feb. & March, and too hot to play football in August & September. 4" of snow since midnite!

We played at Cowtown 3 years ago. It was Sat. and all day it was cold. Our third game of the tournement started at 1am Sunday. The wind was blowing and all the parents were jumping around and drinking coffee to stay warm. It started sleeting just as the game was ending but my son was the winning pitcher.

Worst weather has to be when I was a board member for the local baseball association...we had tryouts for the 9-10 year old kids when it was about 25 degrees and sleeting.

Second has to be Arc Park a couple of years ago. Day started out nice and warm, then rain and cooled off, by nightfall it was 40 degrees and pooring down raining. Although 40 doesn't sound very cold, when the day started out at 80 and you are in shorts, its DANG cold!!

we played in a dust storm last spring with the wind blowing 40-50 mph...visiting team traveled 3 hrs to get there so we didn't cancel...plus, it was a district game...our pitcher (who is about 5-4 and weighs 100+) was getting blown off the mound and the ump actually warned him a few times for moving!

bballmom2...you reminded me of a sand storm we endured in Colorado...Lamar, I believe..

it was 3 years ago...our 15 yr olds were playing in a tourney with 18 year olds...

As we approached town in our SUV...the blanket of sand came at us with such force we had to stop on the highway, we couldn't see the ground in front of our car...

When we got to town our reservations were already made at the hotel and we checked in...every time we left the hotel for a game...we'd come back and the air conditioning had been turned off in our rooms...it was 115 degress outside...no lie..we thought we were going to die...

And we were there 3 days, and could only get 2 new towels during that time..now picture how dirty a boy can get during a game...

Then on our last day...another sand storm blew in...we were coated with sand and dirt...top to bottom and our poor little team was getting pounded...home runs on all of our pitchers...ball seems to carry better with a nice breeze blowing in laugh

well, when mine got up to pitch...mine was happy when the other team didn't hit one out on him....he could barely see the catcher let alone field the ball if it had been hit back to him...

As we checked out of the hotel, I reminded the man at the desk about the hot rooms and no towels...he knocked off one night's charges for our room...

and then...we had a 14 hour drive to get home....it took me weeks to get all that sand out of my car...

Enjoy your afternoon!

CoachRobert...did you go to the UT - Texas State game.

I know who won, but how did Texas State look...I didn't get to follow online...so was looking for key plays, how their pitching looked, etc...

In other words, a few highlights...please...

Smile

I too...would love to know where Buda..is...

Buda is a rural community just South of Austin, West of I-35 & FM 2001. They have their own website, so they are on the "grow"!!
