Reporter: SHSU Sports Information

KANSAS CITY, MO -- Mark Johnson, head baseball coach at Sam Houston State University, has been selected by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes as the recipient of the 2007 Jerry Kindall Character in Coaching Award.

Johnson received his award during the FCA Breakfast held Saturday, Jan. 6, at the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Convention in Orlando, FL.

Prior to joining the Sam Houston staff, Johnson led Texas A&M to two College World Series appearances and a record of 876 victories and 433 losses. He was the Sporting News Coach of the Year in 1993 and is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the Texas Baseball Hall of Fame.

Named after Jerry Kindall - former major league player and retired head coach at the University of Arizona, the Character in Coaching Award is
presented annually to the college or high school baseball coach who best exemplifies the principles of character, integrity, excellence, teamwork, and service on and off the baseball field.

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes, founded in 1954, is an organization of coaches and athletes on the professional, college, high school, junior high, and youth levels. FCA is the largest Christian sports organization in America.
