Our problem is more basketball than the weather. Our pumpkin ball coach is good enough to take the team to the playoffs almost every year, so 90% of the varsity baseball team is still playing with the pumpkin. If they stay in the playoffs, baseball will get an even later start. The only varsity players getting any real practice are the players that to it on their own - but what's new with that?

First scheduled game/tournament is this Friday.

Canyon Randall completed a 3-way scrimmage with Lubbock Monterey & Abilene Cooper in Lubbock Saturday, Feb 21. Scheduled to be in Lubbock tomorrow for season opener with Lubbock Coronado. Snow predicted in South Plains & Panhandle tomorrow. Baseball may be on hold.

First tournament isn't until Midland on March 4-6 followed by Lubbock First Bank on March 11-13.

Monterey opened their season last night at Midland. Midland won 3-2 in a very well played game for both teams. Monterey jumped out on top in the 3rd against ace Paulson, 2-0. Midland answered against Plainsmen ace Phillips to tie, 2-2. Stayed that way until the bottom of the 6th when they scored the winning run on a sac fly. Each team got 4 hits and Monterey made one error.

Monterey's batters spread out a few good hits against our first pitcher. The Monterey pitchers I watched had great control. Their first pitcher wasn't overpowering but earned some Ks. Of course it's early and these are scrimmages. We had two runners picked off 3rd by Monterey right handed pitchers. Bauks? If they were, they weren't called. Monterey's lefty (Brian, I think) threw first against Cooper and was very sharp. He had several Ks.

Cooper's bats never were a factor against both my lefty son or our big junior righty. No runs with double digit Ks. We put together several hits and scored numberous runs against their pitching.

Best time of the year!

Only thing that matters now is the on-field performance of the players. Best of luck to all high school programs and players!

No wonder we got picked off 3rd base. My fingers can't even spell balk.
