My son is 15 he has one of those June birthdays. He has always played with his class (sophomore now) He starts JV at his high school. He could easily start on varsity if our team wasn't over loaded with juniors. Ok here is the question. Which would be best for him, keep playing with his class 16U or play 15U with one of the better select teams here in North Texas? Second question, Are there any teams out there for summer that are looking for players?

I would keep him with his school class, which would be 16U since that is the classification he will graduate with and compete with.

I agree about never playing down. But what if the 15U team plays higher level baseball than the 16U team he would probably play for?

There was a kid at Keller that graduated last year in the same situation. He always played with his "age" group, and never with his "class"

I think it cost him a scholarship, as he had the talent to play at the next level but never got an offer.

Of course, these recommendations are based on perceptions of your son's & family goals for baseball. For instance, are you more concerned with development or exposure? Will you suppliment the summer season with individual showcases or camps <-- a few examples of why the "best" situation (for you) may not be the most common recommendation.

Without knowing more, I agree with those that recommend playing with his graduating class -- against the best competition available.

I knew I came to the right place for good info. and feedback! This was never in question until all the sanctioning bodies of baseball (USSSA, SuperSeries, PBI etc... changed the age rule a couple of years ago.

PD- I am looking for a balance between exposure and development. He is planning on attending a couple of showcases and the Perfect Game Underclassman event in Waco in August. That reminds me, is Perfect Game worth the money?

If your son has the talent, he will be able to make a good 16U team. Although it will be a little tougher now to find a team, as many teams have already held tryouts for their summer teams.

Texan Son has a July birthday, so I can empathize. Even so, he played up several times (e.g., with kids who were as much two or three calendar years older). But even after the league age cutoff change, he never considered playing down.

Best wishes for your son.

I must agree that he needs to stay with his class. You might try the Dallas Dragons 16u team they might have a slot open. web site is dallas-dragons.com
