Anyone know anything about a workout at Skagit Valley CC around October 25? Son's catching coach mentioned it, but I don't know what it's about or who is supposed to be there.

Must be something different, Pitch. My son is an 18-year old senior. This was presented to us as a college/pro "tryout."

It is a try out, I think put on by the Pirates scout. Alex was invited by Saul Harden (son of Jerry Harden the Reds scout)after we played Triple Play in Fall ball. Was told there may be some College scouts there too. I think it will be a game format.Alex has set this up himself so I am woefully under informed,He told me last night that he will be called Tuesday with the times and whether the forecast will allow play.

Thanks, Alan. Ryan Fox is the one who mentioned it to us. Last year Kevin's team went up there for a couple games with Triple Play and the SVC fall team; this is probably the same thing. I think a couple scouts were there last year, too.

Harbormom,

I think Ryan could get Kevin an invitation if you want, he has connections at Skagit.

Kevin talked to Ryan again and they decided it would not be of use to him. Whatever that means. We see Ryan this afternoon, so I'll ask him more. Thanks.

SVC assistant coach called today and invited KO again. Ryan gave him our number. Says they are doing a standard tryout format (60 times, pop to pop times, etc.) then playing two games. He says both college and pro scouts will be there, but I am less trusting about that now than I was a couple years ago. I think we will go up as he could use the workout if nothing else, unless the Seadogs have a pre-tournament workout that day. Catchersdad, are you going to be there? Weather is looking better, and the coach said the field is in good shape even after all the rain.

How was the tryout? We live just across the river fro Skagit, and the boy is looking at the school since they're local and play ball,

Also interested in what folks think of Kevin Matthews. Sounds like he knows his buisness.

To all,

I thought the try out was well run and a fun day. Their field is very nice and the day was perfect for playing ball. After the try out running and hitting, , the catchers threw for time and both teams took infield for the scouts. Two games were played with wood bats and both were well played by both teams.
Met Coach Matthews and found him to be very engaging and committed to turning the program into something special.I know he spent several years under Sheff at LC State so I know he knows how to win.I was impressed with their commitment to having the kids succeed in school first, then on the playing field.Mandatory study hall , class checks and grade checks to make sure all kids are on the right track there, with punishment set up for non complience. Would definately recomend taking a tour of their place and coaches and give them a look if NWACC is a consideration for school. They will be trying to send kids to 4 year schools and trying to win their conference. Coach Matthews is loking for strong pitching to anchor his team, knows he needs to recruit more bats for the turnaround.
