I would make haste to wrangle an invitation! If I have my facts straight , BBScout (Doug)has been involved in coaching an Area Code team for a number of years previously so it will be an awesome week and I can attest it is the place to be !!!Long Beach is a great venue and the sea of stalkers is something to behold!College recruiters galore there too!!

I'm curious. What is the criteria for being invited?

Montana has some beautiful mountains and many advantages; but none of them related to baseball! No HS baseball and a long way from everywhere makes it tough to be seen.

I'm an '08 player and am in my second year of high school as well as second year of varsity baseball. I look at the Top 50 list for my class and there are people on there who I'd never think would be there. How do you get on that list...go to a camp?

Dow, Its by invitation, you can go as a 08, but it is for the 07's.
But don't let that stop you. If you feel you have the talent than find an area scout if you know one and have him sponsor your request to attend the area code tryout its a great expierance.
Delmon Young a 1st round draft pick was choosen to attend as a 13 yr. old but that is rare.

My coach last year is a scout...does it matter what level of scout he is, and how do I go about aksing? Just ask him to help with an invitation?

He will let you know if you have the talent, he picked you for his team didn't he.
Tell him you have the desire to attend this year and would he recommend you. Its not that big of deal for him to do for you. If your playing select ball those same players are also at the area code tryouts.
There looking for players to man a competitive team.
I don't know what position you play, But pitching is there top priority.
So don't get caught up in weather you make the team are not, there are alot of very fine players that don't get picked.
But the tryout is much like the other showcases/ college camps you will attend.

And how do you get on that list unless you have a scout recommend you Right?
There are alot of very fine ball players in the NW that won't get noticed because they don't know how the process works.

The days of, if your good enough they'll find you is over.
I don't know how many time's i've been to this showcase are that showcase and not one NW player is there.
What's wrong with that picture.
And it is not that they are not good.
Caba World Champion Seattle Stars, Washington Cannons, amoung some other very fine teams out there.
Chaffey, Taylor, Baden, ECT.

All those players can all play very well and need to be exsposed not just in the NW Showcases But all over the Country.
Take it for what its worth Parents your Boys can compete against any state in the country.

I understand bbscout, I'm from the NW originally.
Living in N.cali right now. I've seen all those players in the NW, are at least a good portion of them 06's/07's. And I have also seen the players in California, Florida, and in my opinion the NW players have alot to offer, and have the talent to be seen by more than just NW scouts.
I know of at least a half dozen are so that are just as good if not better than the top players in California are Florida, and because there from the NW they won't get the same treatment as other parts of the country.
Thats just what I think Thats all! The EH

So, pretty much I need to go out of state to the biger showcases to be seen? My parents aren't willing to let me go out of state for a showcase or tryout. Is the Mariners area code team done with? I know that my friend/workout partner played for them last year but I haven't asked him about this year.

Thats not what i'm saying, its just you have to make sure you are seen by the right people, and it sounds like bbscout is some one you should make contact with if you think you have talent.
There not going to look for you, you have to be proactive.
I understand your parents point of view.
NW is actually starting to be more active in the type of tournament/showcases that are being put on up there.
But they have been doing this in cali., and florida for years.

DOWBB, Perfect Game will be holding a NATIONAL-level showcase event down in LA, August 1-3, STRICTLY for '08s. It's your chance to get on the radar for the Class of '08, because the '07s will be old news. You should try to get there by hook or by crook.

I do understand, but is the areacode the only event out there for your hand picked team?
I'm trying to say that the talent level in the NW is very high,
And maybe there are some other great players in the NW that you missed or didn't pick that should look at showcasing in other parts of the country, not just for you. Are the areacode.

I relate the talent level to a resurgence in the popularity of baseball after the 1995 Seattle Mariner season,
when the current 06's 07's were 6 and 7 yrs. old.

bbscout,

Thank you for taking the time to answer these questions. I think you've been very clear in your responses.

Maybe we'll get to meet you in Gresham. Wink

DOW: There are a couple of things going on in this thread.

1. This thread was about the PNW Area Code Team.
2. You made mention of the BaseballNW Top 50 list for 2008.

You should go to the BaseballNorthwest site and read about their Prospect Games. Ask to be invited, that will get you on BBNW radar screen.

Their top lists are based on who they have seen play. If they haven't seen you it's hard to be on their list. They do get input from other coaches and scouts in the area so it is possible to be on their list and not to have participated in at least their Prospect Games.
