My son is invited to tryout for one of the area code teams. I have never heard of this before today. Could anyone tell me if this is something we should follow up on.
Thanks for help

rope- Welcome to HSBBWeb. Don't pass it up. Area Codes is one of the top few events for exposure, and those that receive an invite obviously are doing something right. I've done a boatload of research about it (I received an invite as well). PM me if you'd like and I'll share.

Oh, right...A PM is a private message. To the left of this post click "J H" and click view public profile. Then press the link to send a private message, and type away

In 1987, I founded the Area Code games with 6 teams from California. From the games, the pro scouts and I selected the best players to play the Japan National High School Team. Our American team, included Jim Edmonds and 6 other players who later played in the Major Leagues.
This group lost all 5 games. Two years ago, I sold the Area Code games to Student Sports,a Southern California media company.
At the tryouts will be over 100 pro scouts and college coaches. Maybe 120 players invited, the 60 yard run is first, then the pitchers will throw in the bull pen and a 12-16 are selected for the games in the afternoon. The point of this story is that it is a one day tryout and all players need to be relaxed and in sound physical condition.
Personally, I never liked this form of player selection and in 17 years many players who later have played Major League baseball were missed, including the Detroit Tigers pitcher who throws 100 mph.
Of course, many were selected, over 300 Area Code players have later played in the MLB. Over 4,000 have attended strong academic schools.
Our Goodwill Series International Teams [1983-2007] now number 125 players who have played on a MLB team and 43 from the 2006 World Games. The Goodwill Series events are 6-14 games, which provides a player the opportunity to succeed.
Best wishes to your tryout. Keep your confidence.
