Hey guys- I would like to have your opinion of this camp and if you had any details of it. Seems like a good opportunity to get exposure to a school I really like- Duke.Duke Select Showcase Camp

iF YOU WANT TO GO TO dukE AND WANT TO PLAY BASEBALL THEY WILL KNOW ABOUT YOU ALREADY. THE CAMP IS JUST A MONEY MAKER.
SPEN YOUR MONEY ELSEWHERE.
THEY GIVE SOUTHEREN HOSPITALITY A REAL BAD NAME.

Anyone else have some input on this camp? My son got an invite.

My son went there in July and again in October.
If I could do it again I wouldn't.
100+ kids the first camp.
Each kid got to play maybe 2 innings a game.
They each got up maybe twice.
My son hit well and ran the 60 in under 7.00.
We never got an evaluation or input. That surprised me.
In October I called the director of the camp. He said he was surprised that my son never got an eval. But hey, come to our fall camp where we can really see him.
We went and they told all 60 kids that were there at that time that nobody that comes to the camps really gets recruited.
If they would have told us that in July we would have saved the hotel fee, the air fair and the camp cost.
IMHO I can see why they always will finish in the bottom of the ACC.

Northerners stay North the south is still annoyed that they lost the war.

My son went to Mississippi State and played for Ron Polk and the community around Starkville. What a wonderful reception he received! We were from CHicagoland!

Maybe the attitude of the coach is the difference between winning and losing?

Sirguy, very dissapointed to hear that. Almost any other ACC school would have been a completely different and better experience. we will keep your comments in mind when spreading the word up here in Chi. As BeenthereIL said many of us have had terriffic experiences with southern schools. Mike Martins program at FSU is honest,ethical and they have fun there. I've seen that program run camps where 600 players showed up and everyone I knew went home happy!

Based on what I've heard, Duke "prospect" camp is an oxymoron!

My son attended the Mike Martin camp and the Ga. Tech camp. He much preferred the Mike Martin camp and had a great time. He really like the number of games played and also we got a very good handwritten evaluation from his coach at the conclusion. The Tech camp has good instruction, but doesn't seem to get the quantity of serious players as the FSU camp. I hate to say that because I am a Tech grad but the FSU camp is where my son wants to return to.

That is pretty strange since 13 kids on their roster are Northerners. I would venture to guess a large portion of their student population is also from North of the Mason Dixon.

Also, I lived in the Raleigh/Durham area for 4 years and never once experienced what you say.

Regarding School Camps...

Keep in mind this is a means to subsidize the coaches' salaries. Most assistant coaches work for virtually nothing. The camps make up the difference in their meager salaries.

if you're interested in the school, it's a great way to get exposure and at the same time to get a feel for the school, players & coaching staff

I'd also speak to a coach beforehand to let him know you are very interested in his school

and it really doesn't make any difference at all who else is attending with you - a group of "blue chippers" or something less - coaches will know a prospect when they see one & it's not unusual for them to determine your status by watching some drills, infield warm-up & a little BP

if no interest is generated from a camp setting - you are just not a prospect to them -
either because of their needs or your skills & it would be beneficial to you to find out which is the case

yo i got one of these letters from the coach saying that i was reccomended to them or something and that it would be nice if i attended their invite showcase. does this mean anything or do alot of people get them. This was the first time i got something like this

Go to the UNC program. Much more class.If your son is good I think down there you have a program called Elite.. Good showings

Who do you say more class at UNC than Duke?

I dont what your experience is with these staffs but I know both staffs and have found them to be nothing but gentlemen in any discussions or dealings that we have had.

I am curious as to the basis of your statement.
Camps are generally not recruiting tools unless the boy has gotten a special invite.

We received personal invite - the letter stated Duke could not personal contact him until Sept 2005 and sent a baseball questionarie with the Camp info - (a non-contact contact letter) -- is this similar to what you received???

Yes we received a letter and when we called it was good.
The experience however was not.
As I mentioned UNC has a better camp that lets you know its a camp.Not a "prospect camp"

I know the Duke camp personally b/c my son had attended and now he plays elsewhere in the ACC. Not every kid that goes to camp will be not be recruited and should not expect to be. I do that their roster is comprised of 11 former campers. Coach Hillier and his staff must certainly recruit to some extent from their camps. Obviously they are making money, but there is a definite value in attending camps, especially if you have interest in that particular school.

My son got a huge packet of materials and many "luv ya, mean it, you're our kind of player, blah, blah, blah. Come to our camp" e-mails. When he got there, he threw well, hit well & ran the 60 well, but they were so busy slobbering all over some other kid they hardly gave him the time of day. The camp was a total waste skills-wise. It took a long time to get the evaluation and it was pretty sketchy. Save your money.
