a player I had recommended to College Select Showcase back in 1999 from the baseball powerhouse state of Vermont
( Patrick Hakey) just signed a free agent contract with the Mets. The Mets saw him in the Cape League in 2004.

Hakey also attended Perfect Game too.

Hakey first Lander player to sign professional contract
GREENWOOD----Lander baseball player Patrick Hakey (pictured) became the first Bearcat to sign a professional contract when he signed a free agent agreement with the New York Mets last week. Hakey, who has been playing in the Cape Cod League this summer, will report to the Port St. Lucie Mets of Florida's Gulf Coast League.

"I am really happy for Pat to get this opportunity," said Lander coach Mike McGuire. "It's every baseball player's dream to play pro ball. This is good for Pat and good for Lander."

Hakey, who posted a 1-0 record in six appearances in 2004, saw limited play in the spring due to recovering from arm surgery. But through rebhabilitation, he got stronger and stronger through the spring.

"Pat's pitching is as hard as ever," said McGuire. "I wish the him the best of luck and hope he makes the the best of this opportunity."
