Just to clarify this: is the Area Code Camp THE tryout for the team? My son got an invite to an area code camp at UC Berkeley. There were two check boxes: one for UCB and one for USC. Since we live in N. California, I figure we'll go to the closest one. Is there an advantage in going to both SoCal and Norcal camps? Or should we consider these official tryouts?

The camps are NOT the tryout. They hold a camp the day before the tryout at each location. If your son hasn't been invited to tryout and really thinks he's capable of playing at that level, the camp can be a last opportunity to try to earn an invite back the next day. I saw it happen each of the last two years here in Northern CA. I wouldn't attend both camps, though. Just go to the Norcal camp if you decide to do it, you'll see where you stand pretty quickly.

I'd go to www.studentsportsbaseball.com and check out the official answer, but from my son's last year's experience, I believe you could only go to one or the other tryouts... NOT both. Otherwise, everyone would want a second chance to impress such a large number of scouts!
