What % or weight to professional talent evaluators place on skill testing versus game performance? Hypothetical; Tom a rising senior shows as an outfielder. Tom is 6' 195lbs well built& very strong lower half. Tom has good grades and test scores. Tom runs a 7.2 60, tests 88 mph in throws from outfield with excellent on line accuracy. Tom has a very good mechanical swing and performs adaquately in batting practice skill testing. During the game portion of the showcase Tom goes 0 for 3 with two agressive K's ( Vlad Guierro type agressiveness) and makes a poor jump on a catchable fly ball and it drops. Thus, the question; Is projectable talent more heavily weighted to the quantifiable skills testing or the games played in the second half of the showcase? Final note. Unknown to the showcase folks is Tom has very little playing time under his belt as he did not play much summer or fall baseball. He is just lately beginning to blossom.

Most showcase promoter will provide a comprehensive evaluation of each of the participants. You can use that to see how “Tom” stacks up. Don’t get too caught up in where YOU think Tom stacks up because our “personal evaluation” mean very little in the big picture. While a short showcase “game” may not seem to provide sufficient data to make a determination as to the exact strength or weakness of an individual player, the scout or coach can determine a lot from watching a player playing in a short game and/or hitting BP or taking fungos in the showcase portion. I wouldn't worry too much about and 0 for 3 with 2 K's. That might be a good indicator that he needs to take a few more hitting lessons.
We have to control what we can and try to keep from getting too caught up in what we cannot. Tom needs to stay proactive; continue to get better, showcase his skills, play ball, keep his academics up, and contact colleges.

Just beginning to lately blossom---- by whose evaluation?

I am not trying to be funny but openly honest here---Daddy says he is blossoming but when in truth--after three years on the JV as backup he MAY move to the Varsity as a senior---using a Vladi comparison surely scares me as Vladi is unique unto himself--

We hear this every day-- DAD --be honest with yourself and your son-- what is the story?--perhaps I read you wrong but I don't think so
