Ok....let's start at the top.

It's UCI...UC Irvine....or Irvine.

History of the Anteater (offical)

The year was 1965, a year marked by political upheaval, war protests ... and a brand new UC campus in Irvine.

Rising from the middle of the green fields that once sustained the buffalo herds of James Irvine was UCI, a campus soon to become distinctive for its high quality of programs, faculty and academics.

A student named Schuyler Hadley Basset III was concerned with the choice of the mascot. He wasn't too thrilled with the proposed Roadrunner, Unicorn, or Golden Bison.

Schuyler and his buddies desired something unique, nontraditional... something slightly radical. Then someone mentioned the *** anteater ***. It was perfect! Inspired by the Johnny Hart comic strip, "B.C.," the Anteater had all the makings of an ideal mascot for the infant university. It was original and slightly irreverent.

In a student vote, the Anteater won convincingly over the other mascots.

Anteater 42%
Roadrunner 10%
Unicorn 6%
Golden Bison 3%
None of the Above 41%

The fearsome UCI Anteaters unveiled their war cry (in the strip, the anteater's tongue impacting its prey is accompanied by a resounding "ZOT!"). At the first intercollegiate athletic event, a water polo match against Cal Poly Pomona, it was a strange yell, unsettling but effective. UCI won the match 22 to 6.

History of the Anteaters
(Unoffical)
Rated PG-13

This is probably how it really happened:

Student 1: (inhales and holds breath)
Student 2: “Dude, pass me the roach….”
Student 1: “This is so cool…no parents….no curfew…..”
Student 2: (inhales and holds breath)
Student 3: “Over here….” (Inhales and holds breathe)
Student 1: “Dude, we need a mascot”
Student 2: (inhales and holds breath)
Student 3: “Yah…something to really **** off everybody”
Student 2: “How about The Doobies?”
Laughing…..
Student 1: “There ain’t no way that’s gonna happened.”
Student 3: (inhales and holds breath)
Student 2: I’m hungry, got anything to eat?”
Student 1: Yeah…..chips, beer and corn flakes.”
Student 3: (inhales and holds breath)
Student 2: “I already ate all that got anything else?”
Student 3: “Man, all you do is eat…..”
Student 2: “I love Eating and” …(inhales and holds breath)
Laughing
Student 3: “Yeah, you a habitual Eater!”
Student 2: “Dude……Eater….how about Eater!”
Student 1: “That’s rad….Eaters won’t fly by the Chancellors…”
Student 2: (inhales and holds breath)
Student 2: “ANTEATERS!”
Laughing, snorting and general merriment…
Student 1: (inhales and holds breath)

Congrats,
Glad to see UCI in the CWS with the other West Coast/Pac10 teams. Wonder how many more West Coast teams would have made it if they hadn't put all the West Coast teams on one side of the draw?

It was close...42% to 41%...a few votes the other way and we could have been seeing the UC Irvine 'None of the Aboves' in Omaha!

California,..I have been gone tooo long!

quote:
U.C. Merced May Change Mascot To Fairy Shrimp
(AP) MERCED, Calif. A move by some students at UC Merced could end up pitting a Golden Bobcat against a Fairy Shrimp.

The Golden Bobcat was chosen as the university's mascot by area school children before the campus opened last year.

But now a school official says some students are rallying for a name change to the Fairy Shrimp.

The shrimp is an endangered creature found in the vernal pools on and around the campus.

If UC Merced does change the name of its mascot it would be joining a couple of other universities with unusual names.

UC Santa Cruz calls its teams the Banana Slugs, while U-C Irvine calls its mascot the Anteaters.

Hey Zach...welcome to the HSBBW.

Thanks for the post. Please clarify one thing though...are the Anteaters going to with the whole thing or whiff the whole thing?

At least Mr Basset III wasn't so egotistical as to nominate his family name ...

My personal favorite ... could be the Flying Bassets (?)

By the way, Bully, a major congrats to your son and his teammates for a great season. Hoping they can do it all ... !!!

Very cool clip ...

I can honestly say that I am rooting for UCI to take it all. Granted, either BWC team winning would be good for the conference, but a part of me does resent the fact that the Titans' regional was just a tad bit easier to handle than UCR's. But unfortunately when a bulldog pitcher slams his pitching hand to the kitchen counter when he is upset about something, and breaks his knuckle, it does cause problems with depth in the pitching staff. But that is all behind us and hopefully they can rebuild for next year. (I had better quit before the HSBBW whining police catch me ... we have some of those on the BW baseball forum, too, as you well know.)

Serrano has done wonderful things for the 'Eater program. I love the obvious team chemistry that I was able to witness in both games. So ... GO BIG WEST !!!! GO 'EATERS !!!!

And I love the uniforms with 'Eaters across the chest ... too cool.
