He could be pulling off the ball, opening up his front side too early. He could also have a long swing or rolling over his wrist too soon. There are several things, it's hard to say without actually seeing him swing it.

Hard to say without seeing video, but it's a symptom of pulling the front shoulder out early (spinning).

He might be trying to pull an outside pitch instead of taking it opposite field. (assuming he is a RH Hitter)

Florida: why would it matter if he was right or left?

Tell him to stand closer to the plate, or crowd the plate more... let me know if it works.

If he was a left hand hitter and he tried to pull a outside pitch the weak grounder would probably go to the 2nd baseman...He said it was going to short...If he was a lefty that would be opposite field and there would be a different issue hitting weak grounders to opposite field.

Bluedog,
That is easily one of the best posts you've ever written. Actually made a suggestion trying to help somebody. I actually am impressed.

Now...finish it. You've only gone halfway; now it's teaching time.

Rog,

Sometimes us hitting folks...myself included make things too difficult but as many have said sometimes it is too hard to figure out what is going on without seeing some video. If he is a RH hitter and he is hitting ground balls that are not hit to hard to the SS, he may just be letting the ball travel too far...letting it get to deep and the result is he would be hitting the ball from the trademark in towards his hands.....resulting in a lot of ground balls to the SS.....that is providing the balls are on the inner part of the plate........if the balls are on the outer part of the plate and he is a RH batter he may be making contact too soon and not letting the ball get in further, which will result in a GB to SS although the pitch outside will be hit a little harder than the one on the inside of the plate.

I hope I have not mudied up the waters....O42
