Braves announcer Skip Caray passed away yesterday. I was in my teens when TBS (then WTCG 17) hit the airwaves with their extremely pathetic Braves...showing them at 735 and then again at 1205 AM. Skip added the humor to those broadcasts, and it was even better in the early 90's when the suddenly got good. Although his signature call when Bream scored against the Pirates...he was much more than that...he was the connection many of us shared with those Atlanta Braves.

When we first got cable, in Southern Indiana, way back when, there weren't many channels... and Skip's was the first voice we heard.

Corporate broadcasting has long since moved to a place that wouldn't allow Skip to keep a job, unless he jumped in the bag with the rest of the cheerleaders.

Although our family are Cubs (and Royals) fans, we've always known which Caray was the better pbp broadcaster.

And whenever any of us say the name "Chippuh Jonez", we always say it Skip's way.

That made me smile HD. Same way in our house.

He was a great voice, and he served baseball well. Skip Caray will be missed. He and his dad will have a lot of fun watching games together from the best seats.

Isn't it amazing how a radio/TV guy can play such a big role in hooking you into baseball for life? They create images in your head, give great insight, mold your thoughts about on-field heros.

For me it was Joe Nuxhall with the Reds...also passed last year.

So I "get it" completely JT when you say, "he was the connection many of us shared with those Atlanta Braves."

My thoughts and prayers to Skip's family and the entire extended Braves family. He will be missed. Frown

Truly sorry to see Skip go, understanding that I often do not see the masters plan........

Isn't it funny that the really great announcers in baseabll probably would not be able to get a job today in the "corporate voice" world........

But to that end, we are left with some of the great voices and great memories of those who have called the game...

No one would hire, Harry Karay, Mel Allen, Bob Prince or Skip Karay today.........

lets just enjoy Vin Scully and Ernie Harwell as long as we can....

Being from Orlando, so Fl and living in ATL. I watched Skip for years. I also used to have Magic season Tics and was at Chip's games for the Magic before he went to Chi-town and the Cubs. Of course, we all watched Harry. Quite a family legacy.
